Free range eggs are tasting crap, change supplier

I have an egg lady who delivers two extra large trays of eggs for £14 quid and last two weeks.

However I've noticed they aren't that yellow when scrambled and don't taste of much. The white are also very lacking in colour.

Everyone goes on about the eggs and they are cheap, plus free range.

I had some sainsburys ones recently and they tasted lush. Not sure if it's because they are smaller? Not sure about the price as I didnt buy

Thoughts?

YANBU. If they don't taste good, stop buying them.

I have a couple of chickens. Their eggs taste good, the yolks are a pretty normal colour (what you feed them makes a difference)

Are you sure they're free range?

Cadenza12 · 08/08/2025 11:18

The colour of the yolk is defined or at least influenced by what the hens are being fed. Our eggs were free-range as a child and the yolks were a pale yellow, not the sunset orange you get in some supermarket eggs. Are you sure they are free-range and actually fresh,? Fresh eggs definitely taste different.

Are the birds indoors is avian flu restrictions lifted? It could also be what she's feeding them, you can buy free range eggs in the supermarket that are tastier and not £1

They are stamped free range or organic... Let me check later.

They only taste good if boiled/steamed and runny

I bought some organic free range eggs from Waitrose last week which were completely tasteless with a yoke the size of a raisin. I shall stick with the usual standard free range at Tesco in future.

I'm concerned about the white, as it's not a full white colour when cooked, still quite transiltent

It’s worth knowing that free range and organic are two very different standards.
I had always assumed that free range meant hens being outside and able to do their thing, and organic just referred to their food, but not so.
Free range hens have the opportunity to go outside but often there are so many in a barn that they can’t get out. Organic hens are given much more freedom and their standards of living are much higher.

SpunkyPombear · 08/08/2025 12:18

Just free range
Maybe I'll look at organic instead

No, you should definitely continue shelling out £30 a month for something that tastes crap.

FFS.

I buy Aldi organic which are quite tasty. Tried Burford Brown, Cacklebean etc but didn't find the taste vs price ratio to be worthwhile vs Aldi organic. I only eat poached runny eggs.

And yes yolk colour is determined by feed. Super orange yolks typically mean paprika is in their diet and does not impact taste.

kalisimera · 08/08/2025 13:05

Many free range hens are housed in flocks of thousands, and have all their feeders and drinkers inside huge sheds - a lot of these hens don’t bother going outside at all even though they can.

Burford Browns taste fantastic boiled or poached. M&S standard free range at 1.45 for 6 seem ok. I get the longest date on the box if possible. Booths had 12 free range for £3 today
