So I found out yesterday that my tongue has been in the wrong place all my life (I'm 40 something) and I've been blissfully unaware all this time.

Apparently poor tongue posture can:

  • Worsen teeth crowding/open bite
  • Narrow palate & alter facial structure
  • Promote mouth breathing & airway issues
  • Affect speech/swallowing mechanics
  • Contribute to head-forward posture
  • Impair sleep quality via snoring/micro-arousals

My mind is boggled. Is it really just me. Feels very weird and wrong to put my tongue up there - is everyone really walking around with their tongue up at the roof of their mouths...?? How weird.

Curious to know!

You are being unreasonable = Of course my tongue is in the correct position, you myofunctional weirdo.

You are not being unreasonable = What? No one told me my tongue was supposed to be there either!

The human race has survived 200,000 years without being told where to place their tongue.

This is one of the many pseudoscientific "therapies" that turn up every couple of months just to be forgotten when the next fad comes up.

I feel really conscious of my tongue now!

I think it rests in the proper position but I have honestly never given it any thought and now it feels weird in my mouth

The pics look the same to me, what am I missing? But mine sits on the bottom of my mouth. Is that wrong?!

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 13/11/2025 00:05

Who doesn't breathe in and out through their nose? That's what it's there for.

RLTraitors · 13/11/2025 00:14

I think my tongue just rests at the bottom. I have no idea now because you have tripped me out thinking about this!

So you breathe out through your nose too? Thanks

@Ichangedmynameonceyes always, well until I start snoring when I fall asleep apparently! 😀

But I hate mouth breathing! If I have a blocked nose then it’s inevitable but otherwise I just don’t. I find that feeling of a dry mouth and throat too uncomfortable. Feels like I’m not getting enough air in my lungs too.

I have an overbite, narrow palette, and i suspect a deviated septum too, mine rests on the floor of my mouth and its all very well people saying 'this is ridiculous, there's no wrong place to put your tongue' but I've had dental and throat issues my whole life because of it! I remember when I had braces fitted as a teenager my ortho saying 'you need to breath through your nose' and me literally having to figure out how to do it in the chair... if I breath through my nose, the best way I can describe it is im breathing but im only getting about 25% of the oxygen i should. This improves by about 30% if I push my lower jaw forward, but I've never been able to breath properly. I have no idea how id go about approaching it with a GP, I know that jaw surgery is the only option for the overbite but I just dont know if id hit any threshold for septum surgery as it causes me problems you couldn't 100% attribute to a deviated septum...
