AIBU to think we don't need to tell the insurer about daughter learning to drive?

Hi All,
My daughter has just started learning to drive and we're now doing some practice sessions in our car. She's got her provisional licence and everything, and I'm sitting with her, but we haven't told our car insurance company. I'm thinking, she's not the main driver, it's just a bit of practice with me supervising, so surely we don't need to add her as a named driver?
I've heard some people say you need special learner insurance or to add them to your policy, but it feels a bit OTT for just a few supervised drives. I'm a bit worried about the premium shooting up, to be honest!
Am I being unreasonable to think we can just carry on as we are, or do we really need to contact our insurer? Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice on what to do would be amazing, as I'm totally clueless about all this.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you need to add her. What if she crashes the car or runs into someone?

Glammar · 07/08/2025 10:35

You need to get her insured. There's a company called Collingwood that are really reasonable for learner insurance. I'm in the same boat with my DS but there is no way he will be driving my car without insurance. It's illegal for a start and if there's an accident your insurance will be void.

Waterbortle · 07/08/2025 10:35

Yes, you absolutely need to insure her.

Adding a learner driver is not that expensive. Adding her once she's passed her test will be ££££

Silverbirchleaf · 07/08/2025 10:36

Course you need to add her! What if she has an accident, or someone crashes into you?

Fountofwisdom · 07/08/2025 10:36

Are you serious? If she’s driving on the road, she needs to have insurance, end of. If she gets caught driving without insurance, she risks losing her licence before she’s even passed her test. Ludicrous that you even need to ask this question.

Soontobe60 · 07/08/2025 10:36

Bloody hell, what planet are you on? Unless your car is already insured for any driver including learner drivers, then no one else is insured to drive it!!

Bananachimp · 07/08/2025 10:36

What? Of course she needs to be insured to drive the car!

Mimbl · 07/08/2025 10:37

Of course you're unreasonable. A person can't legally drive if not insured. What do you think a named driver is meant to be for? And a learner obviously costs more precisely because they're more of a risk.

socks1107 · 07/08/2025 10:37

Of course you need to add her onto your insurance or get her a policy. You being in the car doesn’t make it insured

GCAcademic · 07/08/2025 10:37

I despair.

TheNightingalesStarling · 07/08/2025 10:37

She's not insured to drive your car. So technically Driving without Insurance, which is illegal and can get 6 points on her license

SportsDirect · 07/08/2025 10:37

Of course you need to add her. There are also companies which do specialist learner insurance which you buy separately to your own policy, if your insurer won't cover her.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/08/2025 10:37

Yes you need something like Young marmalade insurance for learners, it's not that expensive.

IncessantNameChanger · 07/08/2025 10:38

I have my son on a stand alone Learners insurance. He pulled out to someone on the left on a roundabout.

You need insurance!

MagneticSquirrel · 07/08/2025 10:38

Is she driving the car on public roads? If yes then of course she needs to be insured what happens if she has an accident or even if someone goes into the back of the car at traffic lights etc while she is driving, are you going to lie to the insurance company and say you were driving?

Unless she is practicing on completely private land and I doubt there are many places you can do this anymore, then absolutely needs to be on insurance.

The insurance cost is why many people cannot do any practice outside of lessons!

Coffeeishot · 07/08/2025 10:38

Why wouldn't you add her ? She is driving uninsured she could be prosecuted/points on license if she is involved in an accident, if you are trying to safe money just stop taking her out.

Seeline · 07/08/2025 10:38

This is illegal

As the supervising driver you risk loosing your licence or worse if something major were to happen.

we used Veygo for ours - you can literally just insure them on your car for a couple of hours at a time. If you are only going out occasionally, it makes sense. If you are taking them out frequently then of course you need to put them on your insurance!!

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 07/08/2025 10:38

Do to know how insurance works?
Of course you tell them! Or at least get her her own insurance.

Do you think companies who provide lessons don't insure their customers, because they're "supervising"? And they have dual controls, which i very much doubt you do!

needapokerface · 07/08/2025 10:39

OMG !!!!! you need to inform your insurance company straight away, should you be stopped for any reason and your daughter was driving, the police would remove the car for no insurance, your daughter would be fined and have points on her licence for driving with no insurance that she would have to declare for years, and would probably not get insurance as it would be that high. The police would also rightly give you a proper dressing down.

EastEndQueen · 07/08/2025 10:39

Absolutely need to add her as a leaner driver. You will need cover if she causes damage. The rate for a leaner driver is usually distinct from a qualified named driver (my DH had to ring on the day I passed last year to change my insurance from supervised learner to named driver). There will be a cost unfortunately, the risks of learner and new driver are higher, and therefore the likelihood of the company holding those risks having to pay out is higher. But madness and illegal to do without.

Bambamhoohoo · 07/08/2025 10:39

This is literally exactly what you’re supposed to do 😂

MollyButton · 07/08/2025 10:39

I’d recommend Marmalade for stand alone learner driver insurance. But yes she needs to be insured

TonTonMacoute · 07/08/2025 10:39

Of course you need to tell them. Don't be ridiculous!

BellissimoGecko · 07/08/2025 10:40

Of course you need to insure her!! What if she has an accident? I can’t believe you’re asking this.

Sundaymorningcalla · 07/08/2025 10:40

This has to be a wind up or you're a colossal idiot.
