Looking to see what other people do with their evenings.
I usually get home from work around 4pm I leave the house around 8.15am….. by the time I get home do a few jobs, washing, put the hoover round feed elderly parent, walk the dog for around an hour, I will try and fit in something for me for an hour either a run, walk, yoga class then get home prepare/cook supper for family of 3/4 depending who is in/out clear up.

I usually sit down around 8-9pm then what ? T.V is so boring generally……..Im often too tired to start a movie or read, I usually just end up scrolling on my phone then go to bed.
Anyone out there doing anything better, am I missing out ?

I don't watch TV but my DH does. I tend to sit in the same room often but do a hobby. I crochet, sew, read and draw. That fills a couple of hours in an evening if I'm not going out.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/08/2025 21:33

I do different things. Monday go to choir, Tuesday sometimes an exercise class. I’m doing a course so sometimes do a bit of that. To relax I tend to read or watch tv.

OakAshRowan · 06/08/2025 21:44

Crochet and an audiobook.

AvidJadeShaker · 06/08/2025 21:49

I stay in and watch TV 6 nights a week. 3 of the nights I watch a film and the others I binge a boxset. I go out once a week.

autienotnaughty · 06/08/2025 21:54

By time we sit down it’s 830/9 and we go bed 930.
Dh watches tv I like to -
read
embroidery
crosswords
look at my phone /life admin

User415373 · 06/08/2025 21:59

Your evenings sound lovely! No idea how you fit all that in.
I finish at 5 then by the time we've done dinner, clear up, spend time with the kids, bath, bedtime it's 9pm. Then it's TV for one hour while I do life admin.
And the next day, and the next day, and the next.....

TheSandgroper · 07/08/2025 04:37

Family history/genealogy can take up a bit of time. And a bit more. And a bit more, for that matter.

Pennyforyourthoughtsplease · 07/08/2025 04:50

What about a puzzle? Or jist relax and listen to music?

MidnightScroller · 07/08/2025 05:05

Started studying as I was bored too - it’s so much more fulfilling!

Bearbookagainandagain · 07/08/2025 05:29

I wish I had that much time left! I guess it will come when the kids pass the toddler stage 🤞

I usually get home with the kids around 5:30-6pm. Then dinners, PJS, bedtime routine it's already 7:30pm.

Youngest one takes bloody ages to sleep, so one of us is usually stuck until 9pm. The other one prepare dinner, by the time we've both eaten it's usually 9-9:30pm.

For the last hour of the day, the only thing I have energy for is TV!

That's a good idea. What are you studying?

Sajacas · 07/08/2025 07:53

Do you sleep ok?
I have really noticed a difference if I spend the evening with TV/phone vs not.

MascaraGirl · 07/08/2025 07:58

I try really hard not to use my phone/ipad for the hour prior to going to bed (although reading on my kindle is allowed!). I agree that TV can be poor at that time of night, but I can usually find a box-set or a series on iplayer/Netflix, rather than watching what’s being broadcast that evening.

Wolfpa · 07/08/2025 08:02

It depends on the evening, I tend to cook enough for two nights meals in one go so I free up some time throughout the week.

on the nights I’m not cooking we will play board games, go for walks possibly pop into the pub.

on cooking nights it is normally cleaning and watching tv / reading a book

I will sit in the same room as hubby if he’s watching a movie but quite often its an action movie with the volume turned up. We have an open plan style house so it’s hard to switch off from it and relax with a book myself. Luckily he works away alot.

In these times I wear my earbuds and listen to something! Often DH doesn't even notice I can't hear.

I would love to have so much evening time!
Ours are consumed by the dc, very rarely do we watch tv during weekdays. By the time I have finished everything I usually have time for a shower, a read before bed and that's it.

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/08/2025 08:32

I am usually occupied with dinner and the aftermath of dinner, directing homework, looking after pets, working and general life admin until after 9pm. Occasionally I'll manage a run (although I prefer to run in the mornings). I sometimes read in bed or sometimes watch something with DP but I rarely get more than an hour. It's exhausting but I'm used to it. I would like more time to myself in the evenings but until DD is through GCSEs I can't see it happening.

Cutleryclaire · 07/08/2025 08:34

You say you’re too tired to read. Do you want to read?

Because I felt the same and downgraded the books I was reading to be easier page turners and it got me back into it. Now I don’t find it tiring at all but incredibly cosy and relaxing.

I remember those days well. Mine are now young adults who have their own lives pretty much.
enjoy those times while they last,
it goes so quick.

That's what I try & tell myself! 😆

KimberleyClark · 07/08/2025 09:11

Listen to podcasts, sometimes play a game on my iPad at the same time. I like history, paranormal/unexplained stuff, true crime.

Thats a really good idea…….. I feel I have to read long winded interesting books…… once im into a book I really enjoy it. I often buy a new book and cant wait to get started but if Im not gripped by the first few chapters then I'm done.
I just find t.v so trashy these days……. I love a good drama but there is nothing on other than reality programmes which I find really boring and uninteresting.
