School ‘no logos’ policy

DC’s secondary school has introduced a “no logos” policy for bags and coats - so no North Face, Nike swooshes etc.

On the one hand I think this is great as reduces the competition for having the latest cool brand. On the other hand finding logo-free coats and rucksacks is a bit of a pain.

Overall I’m in favour though and it feels like a refreshing change.

What say you mumsnet, should more schools go down this route?

Surely at the root of this is parents complaining when an expensive North Face or Canada Goose jacket goes missing, followed by bullying or teasing of uncool kids? Work on this basis.

I’d never heard of this - how the hell do you find anything durable/functional with absolutely no ‘label’? Confused
banning something ‘sensible’ like Regatta or maybe Karrimor rucksacks sounds insane.

I know! And even if it was permitted, my teens would die a death before they appeared in Regatta.

DC are scouts, not sure what is potentially horrible about that?

Anyway…

the rules is no visible logos. Doesn’t matter if it is a cool brand or basic, they are all logos and all banned.

We had this.
We bought Nike with black swoosh on black bag

But why?
Who has taught them that one brand is fine to wear but another isn't?

I buy DD expensive branded clothes purely because it'll help her fit in. She's autistic and a target for bullies. If it's one less thing to bully her for I don't care if it's not the done thing and everyone should have the cheapest possible available to make everyone the same. The real world doesn't work like that. No adult has to have the worst they can just so everyone is the same.

Ha… when my DD was in about yr 8 I picked up the notion that the brand of rucksack was important, and asked her if she wanted something different. She told me logos were for people who thought they were cool… but weren’t. Saved me a fortune over the years.Grin

some kids are definitely more goat than sheepWink

Or maybe they’re just different. I personally don’t blame mine for wanting to follow trends, and certainly wouldn’t look down on anyone’s preferences.

Oh to be sure, I just found it quite funny (as well as making my life easier!’

Some of the unbranded stuff is junk though. My Reebok trainers lasted years longer than unbranded ones I’ve tried. There’s a reason why brands are successful and it’s not just because they’re cool. Established brands invest in quality. This drive is going to end up with everyone buying fast fashion from SHEIN since they hide their logo.

To be honest it wasn't a serious question.
But really....as adults we should not be putting the idea in children's heads in the first place and teach them it's just silly nonsense.

One of my DC is neurodivergent and frankly this is one of the reasons I am glad of the “no logos” policy as it removes all of this.

He don’t care one iota about the cool brands, and honestly he is so obviously quirky he is never going to “fit in”, cool coat or no cool coat. Having to artificially dress him up in the right gear to try to avoid bullying seems exactly what the policy is trying to prevent.

@JambonetFromage my daughter is autistic and would find the opposite as she would be constantly worried about getting it "wrong" and being in trouble at school.
("Wrong" as in against the school rules - not wrong as in is this trendy)

TheCurious0range · 08/08/2025 08:10

My school had this time in the nineties I don't think it's new, that was a bog standard comp in a fairly rough part of the east end. You can get a plain black bag anywhere.
Trainers more difficult mine used to allow the reebok classics that are all black including the logo , I think it's easier for girls shoes than boys
