From the 2nd to the 22nd August there are zero train going through Stockport. If it goes through Stockport it will be a bus replacement. All the major companies have trains that go through there. There are no trains leaving Manchester on the Buxton route, and the buses were all cancelled this morning 😭🤦‍♀️. We tried to get an alternative train but there are none locally - they’re all impacted. The rail replacement service weren’t available this morning either.

Thats rubbish

LacStCharles · 06/08/2025 15:05

That's pants. We get rail replacement most weekends (so not a work day for most) and it's pot luck if it comes to the station, or stops a 10 minute walk away on the nearest bus route.

Fingers crossed for you that they get the work finished early or at least on time.

LizzieSiddal · 06/08/2025 15:05

What, what are they doing. If they are improving things it might be worth the hassle. However the buses being cancelled is disgraceful.

Venalopolos · 06/08/2025 15:05

Huddersfield has no trains between 30 Aug and 28 Sept, which means my local station also has no trains. And I use the train to get to work multiple times a week.

So I’ll be driving instead, taking twice as long. I won’t be getting a bus replacement when the train ticket is about as expensive as city centre parking anyway and I’m stuck to their timetables.

So I feel for you. The service isn’t that bad at the moment so I can’t believe any upgrade will be worth the upheaval.

They are fixing a bridge that trains go under so they’ve closed it all off entirely and trains can’t turn around so they’re just not going to.

it’s a logistical nightmare

What an excellent reason for not visiting the in laws, thanks for the heads up!

Seriously though, that's a long time and rail replacement bus services are a hellscape.

Edited

That's why Bolt the station cat has gone to his retirement home.
I do appreciate that it's a lot more inconvenient for you as a passenger though.

Comefromaway · 06/08/2025 15:15

Yes, it means that even though I live in Stoke it is going to be easier and cheaper to drive to London for our annual theatre trip. It also affects ds's journey from Leeds.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/08/2025 15:16

YABU for saying that "All the major companies have trains that go through there".
Yes it's a pain but it's probably better than the bridge collapsing.

murasaki · 06/08/2025 15:17

Dp told me that there's a covenant on Stockport Station put there by the man who paid for it, stating that if a train goes through it has to stop. Hence the mad plans to build a loop round it to avoid having to do so when HS2 was supposed to go that far north....

ExpressCheckout · 06/08/2025 15:17

They are replacing a road bridge in Stockport that runs over the main line. It is quite a complicated job apparently because the bridge is also a roundabout.

I think the Buxton trains are meant to be running from Hazel Grove but it's a Northern 'service', so don't hold your breath or plan anything important.

You could just get the 192 to Stockport and then get the 199 Airport Express out to Buxton I suppose. But it is a nuisance for it to be three weeks.

I can't imagine them (say) shutting the Northern Line in London for three weeks with no alternative. There would be outrage.

Steffie2 · 06/08/2025 16:06

It’s a total joke isn’t it. On paper my commute should be 30-40 mins. But they have cancelled any direct trains for me at any commutable time and they are all constantly delayed on way home so I miss connections. I hate trains! It’s comical for big companies to try to get people back to offices when commutes are such a waste of time and patience!

ExpressCheckout · 07/08/2025 12:20

I use the Buxton-Stockport train a few times a month. It gets quite busy at school time, so I understand why they've chosen this period.

But, yes, the replacement services are a complete joke. As I said up thread, probably best to use the 199 Skyline bus instead.

The Piccadilly-Sheffield line via New Mills seems to be running normally, so that's an option - train to New Mills then #'61 bus (35 mins) to Buxton.

But it is a pain, I agree, basically doubling or more the commute time.
