Tesco Organic Mince - £9.25?!

That's for the lean one. The 15% fat one is £8.25. That a price hike of nearly 50% over the last year or so.

We don't eat much meat, so when we do, go for organic/free range/high welfare. Riverford Organics and virtually every other 'meat box' producer are now significantly cheaper than Tesco for that product and others.

How can this be? I mean, I get the cost of everything has gone up, from feed to fuel, but how can a company with the buying power of Tesco be charging more than smaller 'boutique' companies? Are they taking an 'if you can afford organic, you can afford to get ripped off' ethos?

AIBU to think Tesco are taking the piss with this one?

I saw this last week. I think I actually shouted "what the fuck?! Nearly 10 quid for 500g of mince is insane. Yes yes increase in costs but Tesco are genuinely trying to financially rinse people here.

I agree that there's an element of fuck 'em, they can afford it, if you're buying organic. I'm also voting with my feet. Even Waitrose is cheaper!

I notice this too ! It's almost like they are pushing people away from organic and into cheaper deals.

Might swell buy from Gazehill at those prices, it's basically the same !

Crazy times

These prices are absolutely crazy

BarbaraVineFan · 29/12/2025 10:56

It’s exactly the same at Sainsbury’s , I just did my online shop and switched to non-organic mince because of this!

The mistake is to assume that Tesco will always be the cheapest option for anything, and it isn't.

They will have computer models predicting how much a price rise will affect sales.

That model probably assumes that people buying organic mince from Tesco are less price sensitive than people buying standard mince. Either because you have strong feelings that you want to feed your family organic mince or you don't have time to drive to an organic farm to buy it.

If Riverford or whoever works out cheaper, buy from them, they'll be happy.

That's interesting about the computer models.

I haven't ordered meat from Riverford before, but will definitely give it a go.

At the risk of sounding utterly pretentious , try venison. Its now cheaper than beef sustainably produced and low fat. We tried venison burgers on a whim at a Christmas market earlier this year for the first time, and are now hooked. Venison mince is lovely and makes a great lasagne. We are lucky enough to have a supplier nearby...and a friend who manages the deer numbers on a local estate, so I understand it might be harder to find depending where folks live.

I met up with DD1 a few days ago and was extolling the delights of venison and she said" Get you,Mrs Raised in a Council House!". ( She well remembers the days of turkey dinosaurs and chicken nuggets for dinner!)
