Trigger warning animal abuse. AIBU to think these sentences were ridiculous

Just heard on the news that two little kittens were found dead in a wooded area in West London. They had been tortured with an array of weapons including scissors, knives, and a blow torch. Both of them were cut open and one of them was found hanging in a tree.

A boy and a girl, both 17 were charged with animal cruelty and both were given custodial sentences of twelve months and nine months respectively, despite the boy admitting in court that he was killing animals because he had dreamed of killing humans. He intended to buy three more kittens to satisfy his craving.

Am I unreasonable in thinking that these sentences are totally inappropriate for such cruelty and that the authorities need to take this much more seriously - both for the cruelty inflicted on these two helpless little animals, and the wider implications of what they did, given that cruelty to animals is often a precursor to harm to humans. I despair of what is happening to our youth if they can inflict this sort of inhumane treatment to fellow creatures with such callousness and lack of remorse.

He told us what he's going to do and demonstrated the capacity for sadism, so he's not bluffing. The question now is what the State Agencies we fund and entrust with legal powers are going to do about it. Because learning lessons after a tragic event involving this guy are not going to wash.

The state can only do what is within their powers under the legal rules they've been given.

We can only hope they can be found insane and detained Indefinitely for their own and others protection. This is extremely difficult to do though.

The sentences are ridiculously short for what they did.

It’s very difficult as their identities can’t be revealed so the public won’t know who they are and I have little faith in the authorities ability to monitor these two. Somewhere down the line they’ll reoffend and it could be a lot worse and then there will be an inquiry as to why they were released and just able to get on with whatever they’ll do

A 12 and 9 month sentence and lifetime ban on having pets is a recipe for disaster when they have admitted they were using animals as a way to satisfy an evil urge to kill. Being free and not having access to animals will then result in one or both of them seeking out something else vulnerable to kill. It’s not good at all I just hope there’s something behind the scenes in place to monitor them somehow ?

Edited

In all honesty I don’t see what a ban on keeping animals is going to do. How is it enforceable if one of these two scrotes walks into a pet shop and buys more animals. This was apparently the plan after they had killed the two kittens in the woods. The boy admitted he was looking to buy three more. Either that or neighbourhood cats are going to go missing when they’re released. I think the answer should have been much harsher sentences , but I would hope there will be psychiatric evaluations while they’re detained because they are clearly a danger to humans too. Unfortunately the script in the UK seems to be release them first and worry about them killing someone when it happens.

I read this news two days ago and can't get it out of my head. Words can't express what I feel. I agree with everyone that these two will clearly progress to killing people given half a chance.

Can I suggest everyone writes to their MP about the pathetic sentencing. People in power need to hear what we all think about this.

How to write to your MP: Write to Them

Thank you

I just worry how they’ll keep these two apart . Apparently the girl has vulnerabilities- they went missing a month after their arrest and were found with Tins of tuna in their bag clearly going after more cats. Once released and unable to get their hands on animals it’s doesn’t take a genius to see what could easily happen if they aren’t heavily monitored

if they policed animal cruelty and DV properly and harshly there would be many many less murders, especially of vulnerable women.

Absolutely this. The connection is so well known, and yet the justice system seems unable / unwilling to act on it

I read a couple of days ago about deliberate cat abuse for views on line and I can't get it out of my head, I cry when I look at my little cat. People like this don't deserve to be called human, they're wired up wrong and have no place in a civilised society.
