Would wear a skirt with these scratches?

I fell into a blackberry bush (don’t ask!) and ended up with these horrible scratches.

would you wear a midi skirt to a semi casual company event?

I’ve never met my colleagues IRL so I want to make the best impression

AIBu U to think they look too bad for a skirt

It seems like a great opportunity to make up a clever silly story about how the scratches happened and use that as an ice breaker.

Attacked by a rabid squirrel maybe?

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2025 18:13

I probably would cover them up but I may not be the best judge. I bruise very easy and got taken aside the other day by my bosses boss after a rare meeting, who was concerned about bruising on my arms and is more than concerned that I have no idea how I got them.

I probably would wear trousers or tights. Being bare legged is actually not really done in my workplace. It is either a skirt and tights, a maxi/midi skirt or dress or trousers.

I've got a nasty allergic reaction on my leg due to an insect bite. It's about the same level as your scatches OP. I'm still wearing skirts/dresses because of the warm weather and also because getting the air to that area will (in theory) help it heal. But I have to be honest, people do keep asking what I've done to my leg! However, I couldn't care less.

Superscientist · 05/08/2025 18:39

I went out not too long ago with a load of bramble scratches on my leg to school sports day. The few friends I was sat with on a blanket asked what had happened but no one else commented

Definitely cover them up for a work event. They look like SH injuries and you could be judged as being mentally unstable which could affect your career.

What? No, they don't. And WTF is your following statement?

If you want to wear trousers, OP, wear them. If you're worrying about what people would think (and the vast majority wouldn't even notice because they're looking at your face, not the back of one leg, anyhow), you might not have the confidence to say 'The blackberry bush bit back', so my not actually giving a shit and probably getting into a conversation about gardening/conservation work/best recipes for blackberries/bizarre gardening accidents as a result wouldn't work for you.

What do you mean? It’s self evident and I’m speaking from experience of facing discrimination at work after MH issues.

SophiaSW1 · 05/08/2025 19:05

They absolutely do not look like self harm! Wear what you’ll feel most comfortable in

FiguringLifeOutOneFuckUpAtATime · 06/08/2025 11:29

Full coverage nude tights with your skirt if you would prefer to not have people asking/wondering?

I have consistently worn trousers all year so far, even in the hot spells we've had. My lower legs are a mess, as I'm clumsy, heal slowly, scars are dark and obvious on my (very white!) legs. Plus I have a lovely, but very temperamental, cat... new scratches appear regularly... 😬

Hope yours heal up soon and you can go back to wearing skirts with no second thoughts 😊 maybe steer clear of those blackberry bushes!

CVVFan · 06/08/2025 11:46

Thank you all! I’ve gone for the jeans + shirt look as I feel the other too are too much on opposite ends of the spectrum

I had scratches like that in about 7 places last week after having to rescue the dog from a bramble hedge. Wouldn't have crossed my mind not to wear a skirt or that anyone would really notice unless I drew attention to them.

AmyDudley · 06/08/2025 12:24

Just wanted to say make sure there aren't any little bits of bramble thorn left in your leg (I had an infection after a similar bramble mishap as I didn;t realise there was a thorn left in. good long soak in the bath will help bring anything to the surface)
Anyway as to your question, I peronally wouldn;t worry about wearing a skirt if that is your preference, no one will think those are anything other than gardening scratches (or possibly a grumpy cat !) but if you aren't keen, you look very nice in your stripey shirt and blue jeans combo.

They look nothing like self-harm FFS. If I saw scratches like that I'd simply assume you'd been gardening and caught by brambles, or maybe tripped while hiking or something.

OP, it's totally up to you. If you feel you'll be self-conscious or feel unconfident, then wear trousers or a longer skirt - but only if it will make you feel better, rather than because your colleagues will be judging you. They really won't.

FWIW, I had horrific bruises all over both arms recently and I still wore short sleeves. I wasn't going to cover my arms in a heatwave just to hide bruises. One or two people said things like 'You look like you've been in the wars!' and I just explained briefly what had happened.

EBearhug · 06/08/2025 12:37

I'd have gone for a skirt without thinking. I wore a skirt yesterday with legs which are scratched, bruised and loads of insect bites. Not sure anyone even noticed. If they did, they didn't comment to me.
