To think there’s much more deadwood in the NHS and government than in the third sector?

I’ve worked across various sectors and it seems like the NHS and government are full of people who are just coasting, whereas in the third sector, there’s a more genuine sense of purpose and efficiency. It’s not that the third sector is perfect but it feels like there’s more drive and accountability. Why do you think this is the case?

'Why do you think this is the case' is begging the question rather. We may not think it is. Do you have examples to share?

I suggest an advanced search OP as this topic has been done to death.

But you know that.

Oh thank God for that, I was just thinking it had been at least a day since we had a thread slagging off public sector employees as lazy and inefficient. But here it is, phew!

Is that you Elon? 😅

Perhaps I should’ve framed it more as a question rather than an assumption. From my own experience, I’ve seen more accountability and outcome-focused work in third sector roles compared to certain NHS and local government teams, where some staff seemed to coast or avoid responsibility with little consequence. Of course that’s anecdotal but it left a strong impression, especially around the difference in urgency and ownership. Happy to hear other experiences though, maybe it’s just where I worked.

I work in the third sector. The charity I work for generates about 50% of its income with gig workers - every single one of them women.

It's probably pretty 'efficient' to have a lot of workers with no statutory employment rights, sick pay, holiday pay etc. I suspect this is common across the third sector.

There are also a lot of low paid workers in the third sector. 17% of those working for charities make less than the living wage. That compares to only 5% of public sector workers.

Fair enough if it’s been discussed before, I haven’t seen it recently and thought it was still worth exploring. People’s experiences shift over time and new perspectives come up depending on where you’ve worked. But if you’re tired of the topic, feel free to scroll on.

Sadly no rocket ships or billions here, just someone who’s worked across a few sectors and noticed some patterns 😅

This is it.

The employment rights in the public sector are absolutely fantastic.

Sometimes, that makes it hard to get rid of people that really shouldn't be employed.

I've worked in the NHS for decades and that's been my observation.
