Bought new fan so have my old one to brother, now he's bought a new fan so I asked for it back

Me and my brother were given a fan each, they were identicle. My brother broke his so did not have a fan. Mine still worked but was not cool enough to cool me down in extreme temperatures. So I bought a cooling fan which is cooler than my original fan and gave my old fan to my brother as he didn't have one. He then decided to buy a fan like mine, so I said I want my old one back as I only have it to him as he didn't have one and would not have given it otherwise. Is this too much to ask even though he is probably never going to use my fan again and I would like it as a spare. Obviously if his broke he could use it but I would it to be mine unless that happens.

Do you live together

Yabu! You can’t give things away and then ask for it back. It’s no longer yours.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 03/08/2025 14:15

It might feel that your relationship may oscillate for a bit, but any angst will blow over and it’ll be breezy again soon.

SatsumaCat · 03/08/2025 14:16

Of course you can ask for it back. "Hey the new fans are great aren't they? Can I pick up my fan next weekend as I want to use it in my bedroom (insert room of your choice)."

IMissSparkling · 03/08/2025 14:16

Usually I'd agree, but I think it's different when it's family. I am always swapping furniture and household items back and forth with mine. Whoever needs it at the time can have it.

ETA Sorry, meant to quote @layingwoody there.

MsPavlichenko · 03/08/2025 14:16

You gave it to him. It is his now. If you need a spare one buy a cheap one.

That said, it all sounds tedious, and a waste of time.

BeltaLodaLife · 03/08/2025 14:16

If you lent it to him until he got a new one, then you can get it back. But if you gave it to him then it’s his, and he might want one in his bedroom and one in his living room.

He’s your brother, you can ask for it but it feels a bit cheeky and he might feel a bit weird about borrowing things or giving you things in the future.

Boomer55 · 03/08/2025 16:42

If you've gifted it, you can't ask for it back.

crumblingschools · 03/08/2025 16:43

Did you expressly lend it or give it?

TheDreamyLilacOtter · 03/08/2025 18:03

I gave it to him on the basis that he didn't have one and that if I wanted to use it then I could. Now that he's it as one he doesn't need it and I would like it back as if he had of had one when I bought my one he would not of even had it in the first place.

Why are you so worked up about a fan you don’t even need?

But it was given away so no longer "my fan"

Life is really short, take it from me. Actually wasting any part of your day thinking about this complete non issue is such a waste of time.

You gave him a fan, the whys and wherefores don’t matter. It’s now his. Not yours, so you are not entitled to get it back.

Let it go, and spend your time more productively. I mean this kindly.
