AIBU to want to slap the man who just clamped my car

I know it is my fault, because I thought I had until the end of May to tax it, not April, but still!

It was parked outside my house, and when I saw him coming towards the car I went out to talk to him, toddler on hip and barefoot in the sodding rain and rather than stopping and telling me what he was doing, and giving me a chance to sort it out, he whacked the clamp on, then said I had to hand over £200 for him to take it off. Which I did, and he went off, having earned £200 in less than 5 minutes.

I've paid the tax online, but have to wait for 5 days for the disc to come thru and then I can apply at the tax office for £100 to be refunded.

I know it's my own fault that the tax has expired, but he's a person, not a robot, he could have given me a chance to do something about it, couldn't he?

And actually, since I pay online and tehy have my mobile no. and email address, why can't they send me a nudge by email, with a link so that I can pay it straight away, instead of 'sending the boys round'? Hmm?

You do get a reminder at least a month before the tax is due. Maybe they thought that was sufficient?

RiojaLover75 · 28/05/2008 16:16

They do send you a nudge by post. Mine's pinned to my kitchen note board. It's due to expire on Saturday.

You get a reminder (speaking as someone whose bike got clamped a couple of months ago)!

Also, the person who clamps it is normally a contracter, so just doing what the DVLA has asked them to do.

HereComeTheGirls · 28/05/2008 16:20

Sadly, if he has been told to clamp it he can't just let you off! Don't slap him, complain to the DVLA if you are unhappy! YABU

I am told to charge people for failing appointments at work, they give me all sorts of sob stories but if I have been told to charge them I have to....even if I sympathise..then I get all sorts of grief and told I am on a "power trip" etc. Don't blame people for doing their probably crappy jobs.

Bugger. Suspect you're all right.

Maybe I should have hurled DD in the back and driven off before he had time to do it.

I do feel your pain though, and sympathise, I am just bitter as I had a rubbish day at work

jofeb04 · 28/05/2008 16:26

It is a good job that you didn't drive off, as that can cause further problems (car crushed.... additional fines etc).

missblythe · 28/05/2008 16:29

Really?! How extraordinary! Wish I could just set up a Direct Debit and forget about it like I do with all the other things.
