Suitcases have a max 2 trip usage limit!

I am starting to think there is no such thing as a suitcase that is not in essence disposable. I've never had one survive more than two trips without being broken, normally the wheels. So sick of keep buying new suitcases.

Does anyone know of any where the wheels don't snap, or become unusable?

We have Antler material cases we bought when we got engaged in 2014. We go away multiple times a year, they’re still in almost perfect condition.

elliesmummy19 · 03/08/2025 09:59

I’ve literally just finished packing my suitcase to take on another long haul flight that I’ve had since I was 17. I’m 37. It’s been on many trips. It’s from the brand IT and didn’t cost very much. It’s still going strong. The only thing wrong with it is one of the zip pull things has come off.

pinksky78 · 03/08/2025 10:00

I've a set of three from Amazon. The small is used every other week when I'm away for work and the medium 2/3 times a year when we go abroad and they're fine after 6 years still.

BIossomtoes · 03/08/2025 10:00

Buy Eagle Creek. They’re eye wateringly expensive but they last forever. Mine was bought in 2007 and has travelled tens of thousands of miles, it’s still like new.

Joyunlimited · 03/08/2025 10:00

Have got several middle-range suitcases, different makes, and have used them all on at least a dozen occasions (including flights) with no problems at all. I don’t know what you’re doing to them! Over-filling? Most of mine are soft ones - perhaps hard-shell are more prone to breakage?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 03/08/2025 10:02

We've had all ours about 20 years, average two holidays a year. They're all still going strong. What the hell are you doing to yours?

Edit: And no, they weren't particularly expensive, before anyone uses my username to prove an ironic point!

familyissues12345 · 03/08/2025 10:02

Never had this issue, we’ve got a mixture of cheaper to higher end cases. One we’ve had for about 15 years and has spent the last 3 years being subjected to being DS’s Uni case, so it’s looking a bit battered but still usable

nomas · 03/08/2025 10:02

My mum has had the same Samsonite hardback suitcases with wheels for 40 years.

CandyCane457 · 03/08/2025 10:02

I’ve had a Tripp for about 8 years and used it…Christ couldn’t even tell you how many times. And it’s in great condition still, no issues!

PerfectTuesday · 03/08/2025 10:02

I've got an Antler suitcase I bought in 1999 that's still intact, including being used for a 10 month secondment at work where I was travelling a 6 hour round trip once a week on the train, plus some trips abroad.

CyanDreamer · 03/08/2025 10:03

I have samsonites that are 20 years old, and some a couple of years old, good so far- and you can't fault airlines for trying so very hard to destroy them.

What suitcases are you using?

mondaytosunday · 03/08/2025 10:03

Um I’ve never had a problem with wheels. My suitcases have done several trips to the US and Europe - say 15 return flights? Plus more local being pulled around various train stations. A set of Tripp, and same non branded hard suitcases are what we have. Plus a couple from my parents which will have made dozens of trips all over. I think you must have been very unlucky.

Finteq · 03/08/2025 10:04

Mine had been over 4 trips and I bought it for less than £40 from morrisons.

And.still.going strong.

ladygindiva · 03/08/2025 10:04

Not my experience at all. I've had the same wheelie suitcase for over 15 years. It's a bit worn here and there and the zip is a bit temperamental but still functions. Got it from tk maxx if I recall, no idea of brand but it was cheap.

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/08/2025 10:04

Like everyone else on this thread I’m baffled at what you’re doing to your suitcases @StopRainingNow . Assume you’re buying very very cheap ones and riding on them to the airport and back?

herbalteabag · 03/08/2025 10:04

I've never had a suitcase break. I have one bought around 2000 and one bought in 2013. The latter is a little Tripp one, great suitcase. The other one is a Swiss Wenger one that I bought in Tesco with some money off vouchers. It's been used a lot over the years and only slightly battered.

IsItSnowing · 03/08/2025 10:05

I've got an Eastpack wheeled small suitcase which I bought in 2016. Not a scratch on it and still going strong. Before that I had a Carlton wheeled holdall style one for over 10 years. It was a bit battered at the end but still usable.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 03/08/2025 10:05

We have suitcases from the 1980's that are still going strong - what on earth are you doing to yours?!

curious79 · 03/08/2025 10:05

Mine are Eastpak - had them for absolute years and they get battered around the place and they’re still 100% decent condition. You’re obviously buying crap cases.

weareallcats · 03/08/2025 10:07

You must be buying very cheap suitcases! We have cases from Antler and Samsonite that we have been using for decades.

MollyButton · 03/08/2025 10:07

My little Samsonite is over 30 years old, looks a bit scruffy but still going strong. It’s years since I’ve had one break.

Franjipanl8r · 03/08/2025 10:10

Buy quality, buy once. It’s a false economy buying cheap rubbish.

Mauro711 · 03/08/2025 10:10

It has only happened to me once and that was when I had bought a cheap one because I had one go missing during a previous flight. It was the zip that had broken and it was the most embarrassing thing. I stood at the luggage belt and I saw this one flipflop coming down the belt, oh how funny I thought, I have flipflops exactly like that. Then my bikini bottoms came, then my makeup bag, then finally my completely split open suitcase came with my underwear showing at the top.

I then went I got a whole Samsonite set and they have been aboslutely reliable for over 15 years now. Nothing has broken off or split.

doistayordoigo · 03/08/2025 10:11

We've got Eastpak ones too, I love them. Our previous ones we did have the wheels come off, but I can't remember what make they were as they were a gift. A previous one also had the extractable handle snap, so there are definitely bad ones out there.

Gothamcity · 03/08/2025 10:12

We still use my husbands grandparents cases, they've travelled to more countries than us, and out lived the grandparents! Unless you're buying them from temu, even the b&m/home bargains ones look sturdy enough to last a while. What on earth is happening to them?! We go abroad at least twice a year, and thr suitcases seem fine.
