To want to be a lady that wafts.

Ok, I'm the otherside of 40 and feel like I'm missing a trick. I have as long as I can remember used a nice perfume, but I can never smell it. I can smell it when I spray it on, but that is it. Am I blind to it because I have used it for so long, or am I missing a trick?

I always notice that some women smell lovely and it wafts around them. Are they just bathing in the stuff? Is there something else?

I cant stand it when people reek of strong perfume or aftershave, its foul, so I never want to be that person.
A couple of sprays is all you need.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 02/08/2025 18:37

I want this too but dont know how to achieve it 😔

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 18:39

Classy perfume is the answer! It must be perfume that doesn’t overpower. Cheap copies are the big overpowering chemical ones. Try something exquisite and you get a better result.

ShebaQueen · 02/08/2025 18:50

Ah, I thought this post was going to be about wafting around in a kaftan or floaty dress! I am not a wafter, clothes or perfume-wise, but I'd like to be, so I'm following for tips

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/08/2025 18:58

After you've finished applying your perfume in the usual way, spray once on the nape of your neck. A tip given to me by a much-missed great aunt 🤫

swampwitch0 · 02/08/2025 19:03

Layering is the answer.
1.Bath/shower product
2.Body lotion
3.Perfume/body mist
(Doesn't have to be the same scent, but within the same scent family e.g. floral)
Some perfumes really lend themselves to layering.

keepingonrunning · 02/08/2025 19:07

Yes to expensive perfume.
I’ve heard the key is to layer the scent using the matching body lotion, eau de toilette and maybe a small shot of parfum.
I prefer fresh air but if I do use perfume I only use one spray for a hint. Rubbing it in ‘bruises the fragrance’ apparently. I am conscious of not being that person wearing the overpowering variety or quantity.

keepingonrunning · 02/08/2025 19:08

Cross post.

Lovely word, wafting! I spray perfume in my hair and brush it through in the hope of a spot of wafting. Agree with others about good quality.

EscargotChic · 02/08/2025 19:15

Ask someone else if they can smell your perfume - you might be wafting without knowing it.
I remember one time as a teenager my dad gave my boyfriend a lift in our car when he’d been applying aftershave or spray with a bad cold. You could smell the scent on the passenger seat for days afterwards!

I use Chanel no 5! Am I just being seduced by the brand and the nice initial smell? Maybe it doesn't lend itself to a waft?

Your problem is not the perfume it's your brain. Basically your brain stops reacting to the neurones in your nose firing off for the smell to conserve energy. So you stop smelling your own perfume. It's the same reason as to why some people's houses smell and they don't even know it because they've stopped smelling it. Like that febreeze advert. You've gone 'nose blind' or what's scientifically known as olfactory fatigue.
Hope that helps save you some money on layering etc.

Putthekettleon73 · 02/08/2025 20:10

Yes! I want to waft. I'm 44 and my life isn't that of a wafter but I've bought a beautiful (eBay, second hand) summer kaftan and wear it to work and get a lot of compliments. I wear perfume too but not sure if that's reached wafting levels.

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 21:22

Use some body lotion as well as the perfume. No 5 is a classic. Chanel your inner Marilyn!

Woodworm2020 · 02/08/2025 21:28

I also wonder whether we sometimes ‘metabolise’ different scents at different rates. I have some perfumes I love (the Liberty perfumes and Diptique, so not cheap) and they last for what feels like five mins, whereas others last all day. It’s so frustrating!

I thought you wanted to be one of those people who just won’t shut up. And thought ugh I hate them!
Then I realised that is waffling.
As you were.…

MoonWoman69 · 03/08/2025 00:49

I find I waft quite nicely when wearing Clinique Aromatics! Several random ladies have stopped me to ask what I'm wearing!
That's definitely a wafting perfume!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/08/2025 15:41

Wear a different perfume each day so you're not always used to it

DisplayPurposesOnly · 03/08/2025 15:48

Basically yes, as PP said above.

I wear the same perfume every day. (Applied once in the mornings so hopefully I waft not reek by the time I interact with anyone 😁)

Unless I sniff it, I don't really smell it. On the rare days I don't wear it, I can tell I smell 'wrong'.

Imbluedalale · 03/08/2025 15:51

Never spray perfume direct onto clothes , always apply direct to skin onto your pulse points which are :
Neck
wrist
forearm
Lower jaw
shoulder
chest
elbow

Use oil or a dab of petroleum jelly as the skin needs to be hydrated.

Use matching scented shower gel or lotion

Spray the perfume on your hairbrush

Use Parfum not eau de toilette . Perfume lasts 13+ hours . Eau de toilette only lasts up to 4 hours .

Never spray onto your wrists and rub your wrists together it messes with the particles of the Perfume

I love the chanel scents too, no.19 is my favourite, and there are some lovely Chance scents that are lighter for everday wear. You'll definitely waft if you're spraying no.5 and it's the eau de parfum. Like previous posters say, put a spray on your neck/hair below the ears, this way you will smell it too.

I'm also a big fan of using skin oil, you can add some drops of essential oils to a carrier oil that enhance the scent you are wearing, I like using jasmine, rose and iris oils. I find that essential oil scents stay longer on the skin, but you must buy quality aromatherapy oils, not cheap air fresher stuff! I like Primavera oils, just choose a scent that matches your favourite note in your perfume.
