DVDs, CDs and vinyl

I’ve noticed the comeback of physical media (DVDs, CDs and vinyl) is making the rounds on TikTok.

I have a couple of DVDs (my favourite box sets and films). My DP and I have around 100 vinyl between us.

Does anyone have a physical media collection, or just stick to streaming?

I have none but my dh has so many, its madness. The vinyls have moved house 3 times in the past 10/11 years and dh has lived with me for 8 years and not once have I seen him play a vinyl!!

OhDorWheresthesalad · 02/08/2025 12:10

I have lots of vinyl and dvds. Very few CDs - never really got into them as I bought everything on vinyl. I still play my records very regularly and buy new ones. I use Spotify when I'm out, but not at home.

RoadAtlas · 02/08/2025 12:17

I have loads of CDs as we have always had cars with CD players until the one we bought this year. Now I miss not being able to play them in the car. Seems like such a step backwards that cars don't have CD players anymore.

We have CD's, DVD.s and vinyl. When I saw "we" I mean DH. We also use streaming services.
We have friend who owns a record store and he says there has been a huge shift in teenagers now buying physical media.

I hear you. I haven’t got any CDs either (it’s pointless because we have vinyl).

For DVDs, we only have our very favourite films and TV shows. Unfortunately, we have to be selective. We’re pushed for space, so we only buy what we really love and use repeatedly!

I use Spotify when I’m out too.

I’ve always been a fan of physical media. My passion is film and my dvd (inc blu ray and 4k) collection is now over 1000 titles, probably more, I’ve not counted for a while! I stream a bit but films I like I want to own so I can watch whenever I want. I also hate it when films are edited for ad breaks or scenes removed (more so via terrestrial then Streaming) I want to watch the whole film! I also have an early release of Star Wars where they haven’t messed around with the cgi as they did in later releases.

I am jealous of the early Star Wars release. I haven’t seen it in its original form!

We have all our dvds/ blurays and CDs from before streaming really took off. So glad we do! CDs not so much, but the number of times we've wanted to watch a particular movie / tv series and found it's not available to stream! And as pp mentioned, the annoying sticking of ads in the middle of things, often with zero consideration about where exactly they are put...urgh!

Edited to correct predictive text's autocorrect.

ThirdStorm · 02/08/2025 12:31

Just done a quick count on DVDs, I have over 2000 titles!

I have some CDs, all ripped to iTunes to play on my iPod. Yes I like old tech too!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/08/2025 12:44

I have a few DVDs- mainly things that I can't find on streaming services or generally online.

CDs just live in the car.

I never really got into vinyl, which is probably a good thing, given how little storage space my house has in comparison to that of my grandparents... there is still a huge (original) record collection there!

Edited

I’m glad of my few DVDs too.

A family member can’t access my favourite film through streaming (it’s not on Netflix or Amazon Prime), so she can borrow my DVD since they wanted to watch it. 😊

I've kept all CDs and DVDs. Not everything can be streamed! Esp if you like classical music - different recordings with different orchestras and conductors etc.

squashyhat · 02/08/2025 14:37

I still have a lot of all 3. But only a cd player. I'm currently decorating the room they are stored in and when I'm finished will be buying a Bluetooth turntable and dvd player to bring them back to life. Can't wait 😊

Jasmin71 · 02/08/2025 14:51

We have literally 100s of DVD, Vinyl Records and well over 1000 CDs. I will always keep them

Nothing sounds better than physical copies of music played on really good quality equipment.

Steaming is OK for casual listening, but if you want to indulge in a particular record nothing beats the old fashioned way.

Fangisnotacoward · 02/08/2025 14:53

Ive still got dvds, cds and vinyl. They take up space but I won't get rid of them. Not everything is on a streaming service and sometimes I think its better to have a physical copy

My favourite films are typically old Hollywood ones. I love a lot of silent films too. I worry about not owning my favourites because I don’t want to lose the ability to enjoy them in the future.

I'm in this position too.
DH stripped my favourite CDs onto a memory stick that I plug into the car so I still have them.

Lorrymum · 04/08/2025 17:41

Several of our local charity shops no longer accept CDs and DVDs. Seems a bit short sighted when some music and film is not available on streaming services.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/08/2025 17:47

I still love CDs/ DVDs.
The CDs are in a Billy in the corner and that square foot of floor space wouldn't be used productively for anything else.

Earlier this year I bought a new album on CD and that experience of playing it for the first time was a mini event and it took me back 20 years. I just need more new bands to release amazing albums Grin

Ahwig · 04/08/2025 18:02

My grandson is 20 and is into vinyl in a huge way. I had a Saturday job on a record counter and have several hundred singles and probably about a 100 albums. This apparently makes me pretty cool in my grandson’s eyes especially as I have some of the classics. I’ve promised to bequeath them all to him.

outerspacepotato · 04/08/2025 18:02

I kept some of my albums and CDs and DVDs. They don't take up much space, my oldest borrows some when she visits. I have a stereo and cd and DVD player. I have some dead tree books too.

People are fussing about Spotify requiring users to upload ids so I think the trend will continue. If you can't buy to own.....

naomisno1fan · 05/08/2025 14:30

I resent renting media I’ve already bought.

id rather go back to all hard media.

I still have 100s of dvds. Problem is only way to play them is through dc x box!

I have c 200 CDs in the car. I hate relying on YouTube at home.

wish I had my old videos.
