To be this grey at 35?

I started getting grey hair at around 21, and I have to regularly dye it now. It's depressing! My diet isn't amazing and I'm always a bit stressed, but feels like this is it now. I don't feel comfortable with it..is this a normal amount?

My grey started in my 20s. It’s just one of those things.

mondaytosunday · 02/08/2025 07:51

Normal for you. I got my first grey hair at 17! I’m 63 now and still dye it (at home).

Morgenrot25 · 02/08/2025 07:53

I wasn't thst grey at yourr age, but loads of folk are/were, or even grayer. I've actually still not got very much visible gray, unless I part it a certain way, but do plan to grey naturally as it increases. If you don't fancy that then dye is for you - don't automatically just dye it the same shade as the brown though, as our skin tone can change as we get older - speak to an experienced hairdresser about options. Maybe a different cut/shape/style would boost you if you do decide to let it come in naturally.

Devilsmommy · 02/08/2025 08:16

Got my first grey at 16! I'm nearly 39 now and have got way more grey than you. My hair is also very dark brown so it's noticeable as fuck😂 I really don't give a shit what anyone else thinks about it. I'm happy so🤷

GreyCarpet · 02/08/2025 08:19

I started going grey (silver) in my early 20s.

It's never bothered me but then I've been dyeing my hair since I was 14 anyway.

ChaToilLeam · 02/08/2025 08:24

My first grey hair popped up at 17 and at 35 I was much greyer than you, OP! I dyed it until lockdown and then decided to grow the grey out. It's a lovely silver colour now and I'm happy with it. Just the luck of the genetic draw I think, my dad went grey early, my mum used to get smug that I was greyer than her! DP on the other hand is 49 and has about 5 grey hairs, his dad was the same.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 02/08/2025 08:41

Mine’s really similar to that OP, I’m 35 too. Got greyer with each kid. Hair down is fine but it all shows around my temples if up. My sister (38) is FAR greyer.

Ive never dyed my hair but would rather be all grey than in between. I really like grey. But the texture of greys is awful!!! My mum has finally stopped dyeing and embraced the grey and she has a lovely shade and the texture isn’t bad either. So if I could tackle the texture of greys I’d feel better.

MagnificentBastard · 01/08/2025 20:53

It’s normal if it’s in your genes.

I take NMN and I have noticed a lot of my grey hair is now coming in my natural colour.

I’ve heard of this but my pharmacist cousin has never heard of it. So I thought just an instagram fad. If only I could trust you’re not a spam bot I would buy some 😁

WonderingWanda · 02/08/2025 08:46

I think it shows much more on dark hair. I have a sort of dark blonde hair naturally but have always had some highlights as well. I do have a lot of wiry white / grey hairs but they sort if blend in so its hard to tell.

LivesinLondon2000 · 02/08/2025 08:47

I started going grey in my 20s and started dying at 25. Now in my late 40s it’s probably 70% grey. But I have a friend mid-50s who has dark brown/almost black hair who has almost no grey at all yet - to the extent people assume that it must be dyed but it isn’t. The variation in when people start to go grey is huge

LazySunbedDays · 02/08/2025 08:56

I had about that level of grey in my early 20’s.
I coloured it for years and stopped about 3 years ago at the age of 41 and I now the most amazing silver hair with a few blonde highlights through the bottom half whilst it finishes growing out!

it’s your hair can dye it or leave it.. either is normal

jumpingthehighjump · 02/08/2025 08:59

My hair is far better condition and so much more shiny since I went full on grey and I do get compliments and asked if I dye it, it's a nice silver and grey now!
I used to be medium brown/fair but as I aged my hair just got so much darker and the grey showed too much and I spent all my time trying to cover up the grey!

My sister has a classic bob and always insisted she has no grey, (I was very grey by mid 40s). I just accepted it was the luck of the draw. However, during Covid when we couldn't go to the hairdressers, I saw how grey she really was 😂
It really isn't anything to hide!

Minfilia · 01/08/2025 20:55

I started going grey at 26 and at 39 I’m way more grey than this. I just dye my hair and pretend it isn’t happening 😂

Same, I am 56 now. Last year I grew it out for 8 weeks ‘just to see’ and looked like a mad badger. It was pure white.
Last saw my natural hair colour in about 1983, which was dark brown.
Been every shade since then!!!

Superhansrantowindsor · 01/08/2025 20:55

Just dye it. Most people do. I haven’t a clue how grey I am as I have dyed my hair since I was at school.

That's really not always that simple.

I used to colour mine but haven't for 13 years and have no plans to, even if I go grey. Hairdressers cost a fortune and I can't do it myself.

I've been grey since 15. Got the mallen streak at front. dyed it till I was about your age then decided to embrace the grey. Cos I'm not going to win and I was sick of constantly dying it.
Took a year or so to grow out the dyed bits but now I'm totally grey with a white streak! its not an easy step but the grey hair movement is really popular now.
DH refers to it as a mane! I love it and get a lot of positive comments on it.

This is me, a white streak appeared at 15, i completely panicked and have been dyeing it ever since. However im sick of dyeing it every 3-4 weeks so am going to embrace it now, im 45 and realise that if i want to keep my dark hair dark im going to be dying for at least another 10 years. No thanks! Youve inspired me so thankyou x

MrsTWH · 02/08/2025 09:43

I used to dye my hair constantly. When I turned 40 I just decided to stop and grew it all out. I love my grey hair at 43! There’s nothing to worry about, it’s just hair. Dye it if you don’t like it but you don’t have to.

BusySittingDown · 02/08/2025 13:04

User14March · 02/08/2025 07:45

Does going grey prematurely also mean you’re ageing prematurely? Does going grey link to bodily ageing & shortening of telomeres?

OP love your hair, think you’re noticing more as you’re quite dark.

I don't think it means that your body is aging. It's just the loss of pigment in your hair.

I'm 42 and don't have a single grey hair on my head but some of my friends that are my age have completely white heads. However, my face looks like an absolute ball sack compared to theirs 😂. Damn sun beds from teenage years! They can dye their hair but there's not much I can do about my haggard face.

DreamyRedNewt · 03/08/2025 12:28

It doesn't mean you are aging at all. In my family, we get greys in our 20's and women in my family live to nearly 100 years!.
Also, people have always thought I was 10 year younger than my real age.

Itisnotdownonanymap · 03/08/2025 12:33

I don't think that's that much grey for your age tbh. I think many more woman have grey hair than we realise. I started dying mine in my late 20s

Isitreallysohard · 03/08/2025 12:35

Sadly this is normal, we've been really duped by marketing to think people go grey when they're 70+

hannonle · 03/08/2025 12:49

My hair looks less grey now I've got a short hair cut, but mines like yours at 44. Started getting my first greys at 20/21. I'm not bothered.

greengreyblue · 03/08/2025 12:52

Im 54 and have some grey down my parting and sprinkling elsewhere but I have a half head of bronde highlights.Think I got my first grey at 30 after first child. DH is 53 and just got his first greys. My DB was grey by 45. It’s different for all!

Wait u til you get your first grey pube! Now that’s depressing .😂

greengreyblue · 03/08/2025 12:55

With that little grey you could use Just for Men in the shower .

NorthXNorthWest · 03/08/2025 12:56

Most people I know have been colouring their hair to cover grey since their early tomid 30's.

Disturbia81 · 03/08/2025 12:57

It is young but does happen for some people. It won’t get less so either dye or embrace it!
