Caravan / holiday parks

For the first time in my life, I'm on a caravan holiday. Fairly upmarket (as much as they can be) one. Very clean. Quiet. Directly by a beach. Very middle class town.

My god, I'm SO bored. I'm not a fan either of package hols, but this is a whole different level of dull.

AIBU?

So why choose that holiday?

modgepodge · 01/08/2025 10:27

Well leave and go off site exploring then!

we stayed in one for the first time last year. Other than the pool we didn’t use the facilities, I too would have found sitting around the site very dull. But as a base to explore the local area it worked for us, with the added bonus of an indoor pool that a cottage wouldn’t have had.

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 10:29

What's in the town? Museums? Other places? Do you have a car? You don't have to stay on site. What do you usually like on holidays?

MelonElla · 01/08/2025 10:29

Well yes, sitting in a caravan all day will be dull. What have you got planned?

ChalkyChoc · 01/08/2025 10:31

That’s why MN was invented!

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/08/2025 10:31

Make friends
Find the local pub
Go exploring
Go out for a meal
Go for hike.
If you have kids then get some outdoor toys and the other kids on site will soon come and play.

Ted27 · 01/08/2025 10:33

You aren't obliged to stay in the caravan any more than any other type of holiday accommodation
Im at a caravan park now, small, very nice, less than 5 mins walk down to the beach. A few things to do for younger kids. Bar and restaurant.
We have been off site every day

Bgasfraudfraud · 01/08/2025 10:34

When we go on holiday the accommodation is a base not the entirety of the holiday. We are never in it til evening or night.

How old are you?

madnessitellyou · 01/08/2025 10:35

Get off site!

This is the only way to deal with a caravan park holiday. They are either unimaginably dull or horrible so either way, go exploring and consider it a base only.

Why did you book thst kind of holiday?
I have been on loads of caravan holidays it.is what it is ,what exactly where you expecting?

RantzNotBantz · 01/08/2025 10:39

What???

It’s accommodation.

Are you expecting all your entertainment and activities to be on site?

Go to the beach, local attractions, different towns, coastal walks.

What were you expecting?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 01/08/2025 10:39

I did it because it was a friends unexpected vacancy and I've never tried it before.

Have been going out of the park everyday. Beaches are lovely but it isn't hot enough here to have a whole day sitting around on the beach. There IS an indoor pool here but it's freezing. There is a nice playground, which is not too busy (the whole park is very very quiet).

The town is lovely, but young children aren't huge fans of tromping round. And even if this was an adult hol, shopping isn't a hobby of mine.

Overseas it'd be a lot warmer, so there'd be a lot more sitting round, in the sun (or shade) enjoying extended lunches etc. Not as fun in the cool UK.

Definitely won't be doing it again.

We do caravan/holiday parks and only use the caravan as a base for breakfast and sleep.
We visit neighbouring towns/villages, see what's on locally, go for walks, visit museums, I like churchyards so I always have a look in those. This time of year there's usually a summer fair type thing somewhere.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 01/08/2025 10:43

I stayed in a caravan on my own recently. It was bliss! Walked for miles, into town for coffee, along the beach, swam in the sea, did some drawing and reading. Explored the park, watched people enjoying activities. It was only a few days so I imagine a week would be a bit dull, but the slow pace and sea air was just what i needed.

My kids would have loved it, but are now all grown up, and I wish I had those times with them again.

Heartofglass12345 · 01/08/2025 10:43

Where are you?

Well surely it can't be a huge surprise to you that generally speaking the UK ,s summer is very hit and miss??

Ted27 · 01/08/2025 10:46

@Slightyamusedandsilly

It sounds like you haven't quite given yourself up to the great British sea side holiday.
Put on a fleece and sit on the beach, go crabbing, fun fair and arcade followed by fish and chips.

What facilties are there on the park?

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 10:52

Can't you go out beyond the town? There must be plenty of places to visit.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 01/08/2025 10:52

I just thought, 'Why not give it a go?' Thought I might love it.

I guess it depends on what you want out of a holiday. I couldnt do a whole week camping but when DD was young we went camping with family friends for a long weekend, and although we didnt do much, it was just nice to get away from city life to relax while spending very little. The kids would run wild and we would laze about with a glass of wine. I found it a lot less stressful than an overseas holiday tbh, all is you had to do is pitch a tent and blow up a matress.

Having said that, I went camping every summer as a child with my brothers, our dad would take us for an awesome adventure every day (sea, bikes, hiking etc), I absolutely loved it, so its always something that I have enjoyed.

Ablondiebutagoody · 01/08/2025 10:54

So you holidayed in the chilly UK when you prefer going abroad? Sounds sensible

Sirzy · 01/08/2025 10:56

Holidays are what you make of them! Go to reception and ask them what there is in the local area.

Get some board games or things and have a day playing games with the children.

let them play while you enjoy a book.

there are plenty of options but you have to find them!

LakieLady · 01/08/2025 10:56

I'd suggest going for a pleasant walk or bike ride in the countryside/along the coast so you can admire the scenery, and stopping at a nice pub for some lunch.

Unless the scenery has been ruined by a load of hideous caravan parks of course, in which case you might need to drive to somewhere there are nice walks. An Ordnance Survey map is your friend in these circumstances.

SaladAndChipsForTea · 01/08/2025 10:57

The whole idea of those parks, unless they are massive branded all "entertainment" is that you save ££ on accommodation and spend on daytrips and then come back knackered and play cards or something together.
