To think this influencer is right not to show her child any more

I don’t follow many influencers but a few pop up on my feed from when my daughter was into them. I’ve noticed that one of them who’s made a very successful career out of it has decided she’s no longer showing her child’s face now that they’re starting school and I admire her decision.

In contrast I’ve just seen a post by a well-known cleaning influencer who seems lovely but imo shares waaay too much about her children. Another one is clearly setting her older daughter up as some kind of mini-me influencer and it’s completely cringey.

I know it’s been said before but I think there’s going to be a big backlash when these kids get older and realise how much of their lives has been shown online - whether that’s ‘proper’ celebrities or influencers AIBU to think it’s a bad idea to monetise your kids like this.

There’s one woman who lives like a slob, 4 children, makes Amazon wish lists. People buy ‘gifts’. But it’s ok apparently as she works hard and the gifts are thank yous for her content. Anyone who hauls her up about ‘begging’ is told they are jealous. Kids supposedly home educated. One follows BBC bite size for about 10 minutes.

There's a youtuber called Hannah Alonso who makes detailed videos about this - she calls it "sharenting" - and she outlines very well why children shouldn't be onscreen and their lives shouldn't be publicized. Personally I can't even understand the appeal of looking at this content. Videos of children tantruming or potty training or god knows what else are not interesting.

Oh I’ve found my people. I love Hannah Alonso, from her anti MLM days then her influencer insanity series.

But the fact I only vaguely follow Mrs Hinch and know detailed medical information and full names of at least two of her three children is really quite terrifying to me. I can’t imagine what I’d know if I chose to pay close attention.

There’s an influencer who lives just up the road from me who I find quite troubling. She covers her children’s faces unless it’s a paid ad, in which case they’re everywhere — which raises serious concerns about consent and exploitation. Her husband is actually the local paedo former local teacher who had to leave his job after marrying one of his 17-year-old pupils (her), while he was 31 and her A-level history teacher. It’s unsettling that this situation is being presented as content for public consumption, and even more bizarre that she pretends to live in the Cotswolds when she very much doesn’t. Honestly, it’s a strange and uncomfortable setup to see broadcast on Instagram as if it’s aspirational.

Lots of 'influencers' choose not to show their children's faces now, but it is a red herring because I know absolutely everything else about them, their routine, their medical info, where they went on holiday, the area where they live and could work out which school or nursery they go to. Not knowing exactly what their face looks like seems irrelevant in comparison. The only influencers I have any respect for are the ones who keep their children offline entirely.

Is the mini-me influencer Louise Pentland's eldest daughter by any chance? And the cleaner Mrs Hinch?

This is an excellent point. Lots of influencers who do not show their kids faces overshare every thing else about their life.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 02/08/2025 19:24

A lot of very successful influencers have been told that their children are on csa websites and they still continue to post them in certain positions or eating bananas etc - there’s a lot about it on reddit. It’s sickening.

Skybluepinky · 02/08/2025 19:26

No idea why you would watch that stuff, it’s all staged.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 02/08/2025 19:27

I only have 50 followers on instagram and no other social media but I never post anything that gives away information like ‘Happy second birthday Reggie’ as it’s gives away their dob and would never shared medical information.

This. I have never knowingly watched an influencer in my life. I don't get it.
I am more than capable of running my own life, I think if I needed help or advice a forum or professional is the place to start.
I wouldn't dream of taking lifestyle advice from people who only really have an interest in how things look.

I'm sure most of us are capable of running our own lives but sometimes we might see an advert post by a so called influencer and decide to try the product, it's no different to seeing a TV or print ad or one of your friends telling you about a product

What's wrong with that? How do you know about things you don't use if no one tells you about them?

Hippywannabe · 02/08/2025 19:45

I feel like this about Emily Fauver, it's shocking to see some of the videos shared of her children that people have told her have been saved 100s of times.

DiscoBelle · 02/08/2025 19:49

One binfluencer has a blended family, and pimps all of the children out. Laughs about their underage drinking, underage sex, exclusions from school, they don’t know any different as she’s done this from when the oldest was young.
She’s absolutely disgusting and cries troll to anyone who pulls her on her so called parenting.
So long as the money keeps rolling in she’s quite happy to tell all and sundry about the children.

Children should never be used in that way, it’s abhorrent.

Parttimeworkingmummy?
She's awful-shes conned so much money out of people who can least afford it
Claims she helps people who suffer from domestic violence but it's utter bollocks
I had a friend who messaged her about a violent ex,asking what help she could get and all my friend got back was 'awww, that's a shame' and was then blocked by her
She's blocked the use of the word 'paypal' on insta as so many people where asking where the PayPal money had gone and she refused to answer while having £200 bottles of perfume in her bedroom
I heard (god knows if it's true) that she helped her husband paint the mother of her stepsons out to be a wino and helped him win full custody of the boys
One over on his ex wife (who they treated like shit) and extra money for her in the form of the csa that mum pays
She over shares everything and if I was her child,I'd be mortified

Brummymummyof2
She knows full well that people are putting her kids pictures on the dark Web so others can wank over them and doesn't care as long as the money and freebies keep rolling in
She shares everything from the kids knicker drawers to the cheap crap she buys
Her poor kids-she bangs on about her tits and chub rub

I would be horrified if I was the child of these women

JoeTheDrummer · 02/08/2025 23:00

But these people are just being paid to say something’s good, so there’s no way of knowing whether it’s shit or not. Whereas if a friend tells you about a good product they’ve used you can generally believe them as there’s no financial incentive involved.

JoeTheDrummer · 02/08/2025 23:07

I follow Joe Wicks on Instagram as I like his recipes and workouts, but he’s now pushing his kids forward online which I really dislike. I just don’t understand it from celebrities like him who are clearly very well-off - is it just greed? Surely they get so much abuse online as adults, why would they want their kids to be subjected to that?

One of the mums at my DC’s school has quite an Instagram following, and the people in the comments act like they know her kids personally as she shares so much. She posted a montage of all the nursery pick-ups over a few months (basically her youngest DD running towards her!) so every day this poor kid was met by her mum holding up a phone recording her!

Yes, PTWM 😡

ilovepixie · 03/08/2025 00:46

I don’t like influencers in general. Eating meals with their mouths open and not holding cutlery correctly, telling you how great the food is because the owner paid them to do so!

The ones whose content is mainly their children is the worst. The child doesn’t consent to being all over the internet. It’s like selling your soul to the devil. It will come back and haunt you one day.

Mydadsbirthday · 03/08/2025 08:04

My Instagram for some reason keeps showing me reels from those Mormon mummies in Utah with huge families, kids dressed all the same, huge houses, another baby on the way etc.
I watched a few of them and they are monstrous. The kids having to dance along on camera, even the teens, who obviously know no different. All their (terrible) names being exposed and commented on. Can't remember the one I'm thinking of. They're so creepy.

The Beckhams are the original. I always found it appalling how they simply chose not to protect their children. Happily using them to further the brand aims …aka money. They never had a chance to discover who they were, or what they wanted …they were just products.

I think the beckhams are in a tough spot in that there kids are rather talentless & at least ones married into a wealthy, help-set-your-kids-up-for-marriage/life sort of family

Lindylou2703 · 12/08/2025 09:32

I find it strange Katherine Ryan never showed pictures of her oldest daughter until she was older but has since shown plenty of photos of her younger children (I do really like a Katherine).
