15 million children require humanitarian support in Sudan.Famine has been declared in 10 locations in Sudan, 12.4 million people have had to flee their homes, 150 000 people have died.

Obviously it's not a competition, but
this conflict doesn't get half as much attention on MN as the Gaza conflict. I wonder why this is?

(Yes I posted this earlier in News, but it only got two replies.)

I came on to say this.

Syria? Afghanistan? Ukraine? Did the coverage pass you by?

scatterolight · 31/07/2025 18:49

Africa is the money pit of the world. We've thrown billions and billions at it for decades. All we get in return is an exploding population that seems to just want to come and live in Europe.

OneNeatBlueOrca · 31/07/2025 19:00

Unicef has reported that in Sudan Armed men are raping and sexually assaulting children, including infants as young as one.

Sexual violence against children and babies has been widespread in this conflict.

Nobody gives a shit.

What I also don't understand is what people think will happen if the palestinians have their own independent state
They elected hamas last time. Look where that got them.

If every last jew left israel tomorrow and they gave palestinians the entire country back, you really think there'd be a utopia?

It would just become yet another arab, failed state like all the rest. It would be a hot bed of corrupt leaders, terrorism and muslim extremism. Just like all the others. And the israelis wouldn't be responsible for their country going that way. It's just who they are. As a general rule, Arab states in the Middle East are generally not democratic. All have human rights very high on the list. They are generally oppressive and totalitarian.

You seem to be saying Palestinians and other Arabs should not have self determination and should not govern themselves.

From my view its not talked about because it happens time and time again.People,me, grow weary of being expected to donate AGAIN and AGAIN it never ends. Its old news, however brutal that sounds. We do, to note have a lot of Sudanese men coming in by boats so in a way via tax reciepts we are supporting them whether we want to or not, presumming they are paving the way for family and children they left behind to join them?. We can't save everyone and right now Ukraine and Gaza seem the trendy options, thought I struggle with those two options for very different reasons.

Where does all the money go? Comic relief every year breaks records. Band aid raised millions several times. The endless donations is spot on. Where does it all go?

Well they don't govern themselves do they?
The absolute monarchy of saudi arabia
The dictatorship in iran.

Get real.

PurpleChrayn · 31/07/2025 19:24

The reason it isn’t talked about when Palestine is, is because there has been a protracted campaign since the 1960s to demonise Israel, firstly by the Soviets and more recently by Qatar, straddling the media, left wing, and higher education.

Dave Rich’s book “The Left’s Jewish Problem” gives a very good explanation.

Corruption, misuse of donations, using funds for immediate relief but not for tackling the source of the problem. The need for aid in parts of Africa is never going to end.

I’m not sure of your point. The dictators are Arabs. You seem to be saying Arabs should not govern Arab countries.

For a long time Africa in general has been ignored. People just don't care. Its incredibly depressing as the situation in Sudan is a dreadful humanitarian crisis. So it is a good question to ask why the DO care about other areas.

I agree with your first statement wholeheartedly. Heartbreaking images pop up of very sick children from various African countries in the This Morning ad breaks, for example, and I’m not sure how many people donate or even register the reality. Or leaflets come through our door asking for donations with similar imagery. I’m not saying this makes it right but I think we’ve normalising the suffering there to a certain extent.

Re your second question, I can think of a few: there’s people using it as a very thin veil for antisemitism or Islamophobia (depending on which side you fall), people who have followed the situation for longer than a couple of years and can’t believe where we’ve got to, people whose understanding of it is purely from images in the news and are shocked enough to comment, people who pay attention to Uk politics and feel uncomfortable with us contributing to Gazan suffering. I’m sure there are more.

smallglassbottle · 31/07/2025 20:19

Isn't it racist to try and force democracy on other countries?

The reason why people don't talk about Sudan is because it's a very long running, complex civil war that we can't influence or have any say in. All we can do is send aid and hope for peace eventually. The news about babies being raped is horrendous of course. People do care.

I think some people are frustrated that others refuse to look the other way and stfu about Gaza. Presumably we should just take no notice whilst those atrocities are going on.

roundaboutthehillsareshining · 31/07/2025 20:28

You could also compare it to Ukraine. The Civil War in Sudan began 6 months before the latest conflict in Gaza, but I doubt you saw much about it in the news after Khartoum airport, even when there were still daily reports on war in Ukraine.

We also don't like to talk about how the current conflict in Sudan is directly related to British colonialism. For some reason, the British Mandate doesn't really get a look in when discussing modern Palestinian politics, but there's no escaping the reality that the failure of the modern Sudanese state is a direct consequence of British and Egyptian colonial interference....

PaxAeterna · 31/07/2025 20:33

I used to work in a communications role in a non profit and some crisis get pick from media and some don’t. With Sudan there is a lack of content due to the communications issue. It’s also really complicated to understand. It’s long running as well. Africa gets less media attention in general here.

If you are trying to compare it to Gaza, there is no comparison. Conflicts were an ally is involved will always get more media pick up.

That said, I have noticed that a lot of charities are fundraising for Sudan which signifies that people do want to help. But it doesn’t get the same media pick up.

Is a government purposefully blocking aid from reaching the children

Yes, Hamas and UN agencies are doing this.

The way Hamas has been written out of this conflict is just biased and disgraceful.

👏 👏 but, but, but. There are NO buts, when it comes to Hamas.

I wanted to make sure they explained who this guy was, before I watched on. He articulates the situation on the ground, really well. He will be disbelieved, of course. You only have to read the defensive posts on this thread about Sudan, to know that. As for the poster saying the Sudanese war is complicated - that just goes to show how some are not interested in the intricacies of Israel-arab conflicts, they just want to cut straight to the suffering of Palestinians, orchestrated by Hamas. Well, there are two parties in this war - as this guy reaffirms.

On that note Africans shouldn't govern themselves either - look at Sudan, Somalia, DRC, some of Nigeria, Ethiopia etc.

I mean obviously we have to write off all the successful Muslim/African countries and forget often complex and terrible histories of the places with problems. But yes, down with Muslim and African countries leading themselves!

Let's think who could do it better than them......goodness, must be the white people. Not saying you're racist of course, it's just that white people do it better, right?

Completely agree with the gist of your post but it’s not white people @OneNeatBlueOrca is suggesting should be governing Arab countries/peoples (eg the Palestinians), is it?

That was me. I’m not talking about history here . Binary conflicts are simply easier to understand. Sudan is difficult, nobody is really in charge and on top of the two main players there are many militias and tribal groups that are involved.

The claim that people don’t care about Sudan because the UK isn’t involved is a lie.

The UAE are one of the biggest contributors to the current Sudan crisis, and they back and sell weapons to the genocidal RSF. The UK does huge amounts of trade with the UAE, and sells a huge amount of weapons to them too. Where are the calls to boycott the UAE? Where are the protests against them?

The people who claim it’s ’no Jews no news’ are absolutely spot on.

More dehumanisation of Palestinians: the world only cares about the murder and starvation of them because there are Jewish people involved.

They don't even get to be the main character in their own story.

Helpins · 01/08/2025 20:54

The UK exported £23 billion to UAE annually. And only a measly £3b to Israel. The UK is far more complicit in the UAE’s actions in Sudan, than they are in Israel’s.
