Been quoted 120 for a cut and finish. Apparently the guy is the man to go to for a good cut. I’m sceptical but I’m sick of my hair looking awful (early forties) and I usually get it done by a very junior stylist as they’re cheaper.

Very ‘trendy’ place in a ‘trendy’ suburb…not being judgement la but the so-called stylist has probably been on one of those shows about tattooed people. She spent 30 mins snipping at my hairline at the back and about 5 mins cutting the rest of my hair.
As it was my first visit to the place they said they’d give me a deep condition…didn’t say this was an extra £20 on top. This was about 20 yrs ago and I came out £70 down and went to a different place a couple of weeks later £30 for better result.
Lesson learnt…you don’t always get what you pay for!

The worst haircut I ever had was at Toni and Guys, I was so disappointed as it was my first proper wage packet that I’d spent.

£120 is crazy, I spend less than that for a cut and balayage by a senior stylist at my local salon. Unless you live in London I guess.

Verywindyday · 31/07/2025 11:56

Many years ago I moved into a new area and made an appointment at a local hairdresser. The only lady who took my call said ‘ I’m sorry but only Danny is available at that time’ not knowing who Danny was, I said that was fine.

Turns out Danny was the owner, therefore the most expensive stylist ! Haircut cost me almost a weeks salary at the time, but it was so worth it! Best haircut I’ve ever had and I was complimented on it for ages afterwards until it grew out. I couldn’t justify going back to him unfortunately.

I pay about £120 a time for a dry curly cut. It's worth every penny.

Divebar2021 · 31/07/2025 14:16

I pay £200 for a cut and colour which is expensive but the stylist has won various national awards. If I had longer hair I would go somewhere else but I have a short cut and a lot of stylists are inexperienced in technical cuts. ( I’m in the south east for reference )

ddfd21 · 31/07/2025 14:23

I paid £500 for one in the West End of London London. It was a couple blow dry and colour.
It absolutely was not worth it

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/07/2025 14:23

I have spent an inordinate amount of time searching for good hairdressers. I had a great one and he wasn’t massively expensive, but he left suddenly, to go travelling. He came back to a different area and opened his own salon. He does all kinds of shows and TV and his book is closed to new clients, so even if he wasn’t a couple of hours away, I wouldn’t still be able to go. My hair, before or since, has never looked so good and I really miss him.

No one else has come close and I’m again at the point where I think the current hairdresser has stopped listening to what I want.

Surprisegifts · 31/07/2025 14:26

I pay a little more than that every 6-8 weeks. I don't spend much on myself usually but my hair cut is worth it. (Greater London, award winning hairdresser). I don't colour it.

SummerInSun · 31/07/2025 14:27

I pay £100 for a cut to someone who is amazing and works at a Mayfair salon as well as seeing clients like me privately on the side at their homes. He does an amazing job and when he leaves my hair looks great. BUT - a good cut can only take you so far if, like me, you are usually too busy in the mornings to blow dry it or style it in any way. When I make the effort, it does the cut justice. If not, it doesn’t.

if you do splash out and have it done, try to make it on a day when you are doing something later like a party or a job interview that you want to feel great for

SusanChurchouse · 31/07/2025 14:29

I think it’s often less about cost, and more about finding a hairdresser that gets your hair and understands what you want. I have thick curly hair and, no, I don’t straighten it as every bloody hairdresser seems to ask me. Sometimes it feels like every hair stylist had the day off when they taught curly cutting. Finding someone who can do it well is a real unicorn. I’d pay whatever they charged! Currently bald due to chemo so I’m saving a fortune 😉

I used to go back to Edinburgh for haircuts long after I’d moved away because I loved my hairdresser so much. She charged about £60 for a cut and finish 15 years ago which was pricey (cos Edinburgh).

Iris2020 · 31/07/2025 14:30

120-140 pounds for highlights and cut on long hair was what I used to pay. Financial priorities have changed so I would never do that now.
But it used to look great, for 24h...

Same. The guy spent most his time admiring himself in the mirror and dyed my favourite trousers with bleach. He assured me it would wipe off 🙄

Archymum · 31/07/2025 14:39

£120, London, curly haired specialist, worth every penny. I think if you have any amount of natural wave or texture to your hair, it's worth paying for a specialist in that style. I've been butchered too many times, and I know a lot of people who are convinced they "can't" wear their hair curly, but the truth is they just haven't yet had the right haircut from a curl specialist.

100% all of this.

Sending the very best wishes to you throughout your chemo.

20 quid. Looks fine to me

sweatervest · 31/07/2025 14:43

£450. 15 years ago. some celebrity hair chopper. worst hair experience ever. salon in mayfair (now defunct). hideous from start to finish. and because i'm a bit dim and it was so hideous i forgot to tip so i went back into the salon and gave the girl £45 for a tip and she said to me SO snootily "nicky doesn't take tips".
so ... girl maths? i was £45 better off?

spoonbillstretford · 31/07/2025 14:44

£70 for cut and blow dry. Yes, as it's someone I've been to for years who has moved to a more expensive salon and she cuts hair so well.

AngryLikeHades · 31/07/2025 14:50

Word of mouth and recommendation (for example on community Facebook groups) are often the best for this type of question.
I've sporadically paid alot for my hair, having said that I now go to get my hair cut at training/college salons, but through hair cut I need is a bit more simpler than it used to be and doesn't need to be maintained as often by a cut.
However, if I was seeking colour as well and depth of, I might seek to attend a 'normal' hairdressers.
That said, in all the colleges and training salons that I use, you can choose the level of standard that the hairdresser/stylist has reached, but it costs a bit more which is useful to know if you're on a tight budget. Together with this, the students are often watched and guided by qualified staff.

Westfacing · 31/07/2025 15:02

Twenty years ago I paid around £150, may have been more but can't remember exactly, for a few highlights plus cut & blow dry, on the King's Road. It was all good but not exceptional and I never returned.

What did stand out was the finish - the guy was French and really knew how to style & finish. My highlighted layered bob had all the flicky-up bits and waves in the right places - glam newsreader style!

Of course you can never replicate the look yourself, no matter how good the cut and colour is.

Fallulah · 31/07/2025 15:08

A specialist ‘curly girl’ salon where the stylist had trained under the original curly girl woman. I was expecting it to be cut dry, which she did, but she barely spoke to me or looked at my hair; just started hacking bits off. Took her about ten minutes then she washed my hair and sat me under a dryer. It was a hideous triangular shape. All the reviews talked about what a lovely experience people had had, but she spent more time talking to the next client than working on my hair. I think I paid £120!

I now go to an amazing hairdresser who isn’t fad trained but knows exactly what he’s doing with curls, and I only pay £60. Curly hair never looks good after a haircut due to all the unavoidable combing and fussing that you’re not meant to do to curly hair… but after seeing my current hairdresser it always looks brilliant next wash.

DontTouchRoach · 31/07/2025 15:41

I pay £65 for a trim but a 'restyle' cut would be £75.

My cut and colour (my colour includes a custom-mixed vivid section) comes to £210.

Personally, it's 100% worth it for me. My stylist is the salon owner, she's completely on my wavelength and she's very creative in what she does. She also specialises in the kind of cuts and colour that I have (which to be honest, most salons are not great at).

When I had long hair that just had a few simple layers cut through the ends, and didn't get it coloured, I definitely wouldn't have paid the kind of money I pay now - some cuts are pretty hard to get wrong. So I think it really just depends on what you're getting done.

SabreToothTigerLily · 31/07/2025 15:52

I paid £130 for a 'curly cut' with a hairdresser specialising in curly hair last year. Previous to this the last cut I had was in 2014 as my hair never seemed to grow (the ever expanding grey roots told a different story but it never actually looked any longer).

The cut was a complete game changer for me. The cut was fantastic, my hair is now longer than ever (less breakage I guess) and my washing/drying/styling routine has been revolutionised through her tips and advice. I used to wash my hair every day and now only wash it twice a week, but dampen and restyle it daily.

Will definitely get another curly cut next year 🤣

WoollyRosebud · 31/07/2025 16:03

My most expensive cut and colour was done in Central London a few years back, £300. My hair has never looked so good before or since. It was quite the experience although I wasn't impressed with being handed the menu of 'refreshments' You even paid for a glass of water!

I'm a week on from my most recent haircut which cost £67 and was done by the salon owner. He has been good in the past and I have always left pleased with the result even if it wasn't quite what I asked for. This time I was precise in what I wanted done, definitely not just a trim and not his favourite cut, a slightly layered bob. Yes I left with a slightly layered bob and some stupid wispy bits hanging round my face. All very cleverly dried so I couldn't see properly what had been done until later that day. I can't justify the cost of having it cut again so soon but that salon has lost themselves a client.

milkandhoney2 · 31/07/2025 16:06

I pay about £140 for a curly cut and it’s well worth it, he’s pretty big on social media now but lovely guy
