Aibu and heartless?

Just watching morning telly - Joanna page's wild life. There are 2 vets (or one vet and someone else) caring for a wild vole, staining it's eyes to look for ulcers. Other patients include a pigeon and a mouse. Aibu to think that this is such a waste of resources and time? It's madness! How are these places funded (I assume charity). Have I turned into a heartless cow?

“How are these places funded”

If they are funded by you then you are not being unreasonable. Otherwise, yes you are being heartless.
Why shouldn’t a sick animal receive help? We all exist on this planet for such a short time. If any creature is in need of help, and is able to be helped, then so be it.

Little wonder that our planet is totally fucked when people don’t appreciate the value of wildlife and the natural world in general.

Also animals suffer and feel pain and fear as we do. Why shouldn’t they deserve help? Especially when so much of that harm is caused by humans. No one is forcing you to contribute to that cause.

YABU, why shouldn't they help wild animals as well as domesticated ones? When I took my dog to a recent appointment, the vet was reviving a bee with sugar water. I think they have a duty of care to treat wild animals as well, we've taken injured birds in the past and they will PTS if they are suffering and can't be helped.

I often think the same about these charities that bring rescue dogs over from places like Romania, what a waste of money when it's not like we have a shortage of unwanted pets here.

DiscoBob · 31/07/2025 11:11

Wildlife rescues and animal hospitals are run by charities. Lots of people care deeply about all animals, not just domestic pets. And presumably the TV programme you're watching is funded by advertising or the license fee.

These type of things have been popular for decades. I get that some people think you'd be better off donating to war torn Gaza. And that's their choice.

But it's pretty mean to think caring for a vole with an ulcer is pointless. I mean, you watched it?

stayathomer · 31/07/2025 11:13

Is it only dogs, cats, horses and farm animals that deserve help? Sorry op but yes I think it’s a bit heartless!!!

ObtuseMoose · 31/07/2025 11:13

Helping an animal that's suffering and in pain is never a waste of time.

AddictedToBooks · 31/07/2025 11:15

Why would you feel it's a waste of resources to prevent ANY sentient being relief from pain?
Yes, you are heartless for that!

That's different to a wildlife rescue, helping animals in this country. I agree I think it's odd when people adopt pets from abroad.

I live in the neighbouring town to where wildlife rescue featured on the programme is based - I can confirm they are a charity, only open certain hours and aren't interested in your run-of-the-mill injured dog/cat/pigeon. Pretty sure they only take the more rare and at-risk wildlife!
