To be pissed off that my neighbour has cut his road side hedge so short - I have no privacy

So my neighbours hedge runs adjacent to the pavement , and my garden runs adjacent to his. He has had the road/pavement side hedge cut so short to like 4 foot , so everyone walking past can see into my garden . It’s my happy place and I feel robbed . I was out there this afternoon and it felt like everyone who walked past looked in my garden - I think it’s a natural reaction , I don’t take it personally! I have the grand kids out there in a paddling pool sometimes and don’t feel 100% happy doing that now. Also I’ve spent quite a lot on garden furniture and stuff this year - so I’m not happy with the security aspect either . I’m going to have to raise the fence between mine and his . I just don’t get why anyone would do that , as obviously he has no privacy now either. We do get on and I’m not going to fall out with him about it. But I’m still pissed off

It's his hedge and he can do what he like with it. You need to put up a fence or grow your own hedge.

LIZS · 30/07/2025 19:31

Usually regulations mean hedges adjacent to roads are 1m or so, to aid visibility for emerging vehicles.

Biskieboo · 30/07/2025 19:34

How dare he cut his own hedge in the manner he sees fit. He'll be parking his car on his own driveway next, you mark my words.

VenusClapTrap · 30/07/2025 19:35

Not everyone is bothered about privacy.

RedNine · 30/07/2025 19:36

Well I cannot picture this so need a diagram, please, and thankyou.

taxguru · 30/07/2025 19:36

Grow your own hedge or increase the height of your fence. Simples...

He didn’t cut it he actually got someone else to do it - I’m even wondered if they cut it shorter than he would have wanted

Grow a hedge on your side so you have privacy.

MummaMummaMumma · 30/07/2025 19:37

As it's his hedge, tough luck if you don't like it. How bloody well dare he!

The good thing is it will grow so if it's shorter than he wanted it nature will sort it out.

🤣

Put some trellis up, then grow clematis or passionflower etc up it. The plants will take a season to cover it, but even bare trellis gives a sense of privacy. Or a fence, but you'll lose some light with a fence.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 30/07/2025 19:38

We need a diagram

Spirallingdownwards · 30/07/2025 19:39

Surely this means the fence between your two houses is also short otherwise noone would be able to see in.

If you want something taller put something up on YOUR OWN property.

amber763 · 30/07/2025 19:39

Get your own hedge and you can grow it as tall as you want.

Ddakji · 30/07/2025 19:40

A diagram is needed as I don’t understand how his hedge height impacts you. Surely his garden is between this behave and your garden, and there’s some kind of boundary like a fence between the two gardens?

But - obviously not. So I don’t understand the layout.

Rough sketch which I hope makes sense

I’m going to get some cheap trellis tomorrow

RedNine · 30/07/2025 19:51

Ah OK. Wrt fence, put up one next to his (assuming the existing one is not your fence) Back gardens you are allowed up to 2m high before planning permission is needed. Ask for fencing recommendations on your local Facebook pages and get quotes in. You'll soon have a nice private garden again

RedNine · 30/07/2025 19:52

Is the existing fence yours, then?

Trigger.warning please @Biskieboo ... the mn trauma of hearing of a person parking in their own driveway?!

Helpmeplease2025 · 30/07/2025 19:57

Surely the real issue was that you don’t have a high enough fence between your garden and his garden?

Ivy. It will take over

evil cackle

seriously tho it’s his hedge

bagpuss90 · 30/07/2025 20:00

So we have both lived here for around 12 years, the fence between the gardens has never bothered either of us. I’m just baffled as to why he’s done this, never done it before , he’s effectively sitting in a goldfish bowl in his own garden 🤷‍♀️

Well sorry and all that but I think you’re a CF. Actually I really think this is a windup.
