Oh I know. That's how I ended up with a GA for mine. But it was still only 40 minutes and outpatient. It really can't be the most awkward in the day, can it?
And really requiring the person to be fasting for so much longer if the operation is late afternoon?

Yup. Have seen some really tricky ones (and if you’re having them all out that can be a right old laugh!).

suki1964 · 30/07/2025 22:29

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 17:54

I pay enough in tax and I’ve waited long enough to not be left fasting until 5 or 6pm the next day.

No you dont

Your tax and NI that you have paid your working life will barely scratch the sides of the cost of an op

Go look at how much it would cost to go private - ie not subsidised by the rest of the tax/NI paying population

So you are going to be hungry for a while

I think I’d have to be sedated if I had to have mine out, I had a normal tooth out and that was bad enough

I’ve eaten dinner. But the point still stands - patient comfort should be priority, no?

No. Getting through the list and making sure all patients have had the surgery they need is the priority, not pandering to people like you who think because you’ve paid more tax than the person in the next bed you should get some sort of priority. You’ve already decided that if you’re there past 2pm you’re walking out. Good luck with explaining why to the surgeon whose list you were on, and even more good luck with getting another date any time soon. The entitlement is so breathtaking I’m beginning to think this is just not real.

Doctor101 · 30/07/2025 22:30

in general children are operated on in specialist centres so not usual to have children and adults on same list.
other than that diabetics are first on a list. After that it’s up to the surgeons preference. Some put difficult cases first to get them over with, others
do easy cases first in case the difficult cases take longer than expected. Then patients who will go home the same day are usually early in the list so that they can get home in the afternoon, but sometimes if there’s a bed shortage patients who need an overnight bed go first so they are more likely to get a bed. Sometimes particular equipment is needed for an operation that may only be available at a particular time. So can’t really predict the order of a list unless you know the surgeons preference!

Ross, im not going to rise to you or the other people calling me a vile twat etc., as I’ve discussed this with other posters and explained what it is that makes me feel so out of control and anxious about this. If you’re just going to insult me, it’s not the right place to do it.

On my pre-op I was offered the cancellation list as “the surgeons like doing this one to warm up”! Not sure if that’s supposed to be encouraging or scary 🤣

If you are out of control and anxious then that’s understandable and you need to ask the staff for help - they’ll have seen this before and can give you something to calm your nerves while you wait for your surgery. Anxiety is no excuse for the attitude and lack of concern for others you’ve displayed here, so if posters have insulted you it’s probably because you’re so utterly and breathtakingly rude and entitled. I’m out of this thread because a) I’m having trouble believing it’s real and b) if it is, it’s a thoroughly depressing indictment of the me me me attitude we see so often here.

Flossflower · 30/07/2025 22:43

Not the question but when I had a private operation, I was self financing and was quoted a price for the package. They told me I would be done first as if I had to stay in overnight they would have to pay for it. The people having a private operation who had private health insurance could always claim for an overnight stay on their insurance.
I was having an operation for a broken arm. I had already been nil by mouth 3 nights in a row on the NHS when I drew the conclusion that my arm was always going to be at the back of the queue and would fix itself in a bad position and when I eventually had the NHS operation they would have to break it before they could fix it.

But this thread is an anonymous place to vent. If I had walked into the hospital and started insulting staff, fair enough. But I hadnt.

You’ve been rude and insulting to other posters as well as about the staff who will be (attempting) to care for you tomorrow….

AnotherDayanotherNameChangeX · 30/07/2025 22:50

@ScuderiaSedici sorry, I was going to edit and apologise as I hadn’t read the full thread and was unaware that you think you may be autistic. Whilst I do sympathise, having autism isn’t an excuse to be rude.

i understand you’re anxious, as a lot of people are about surgery, but the ‘why can’t the staff just do their job properly’ is rude and unnecessary.. anyway, I do sincerely hope the operation goes well tomorrow

justasking111 · 30/07/2025 22:53

Good luck with the operation tomorrow

It might be anonymous OP, but you started by asking a question and then just got angrier and seemingly more entitled with each post.

This is AIBU and it’s brutal at the best of times, but you’re giving posters more than enough ammunition to tear you to shreds. It’s not just about venting, it’s about listening to the advice given and with each reply you just seem to be doubling down on your unpleasantness. There will be people here who work within the NHS and have to put up with similar shit on a daily basis, and there will also be people who are still waiting for surgery, who are understandably angry at the entitlement of threatening to walk out if you don’t get your own way - and the comment about the amount of tax you pay was unwise to say the least.

You’ve brought the condemnation on yourself. If you’re anxious then ask when you arrive for some sedation to help you cope - for your sake and that of the staff tasked with caring for you.

I second this OP. Clearly you’re anxious, but again that’s no excuse for the level of rudeness and entitlement. It will be fine. Based on recent experience, general anaesthetics are really good these days - quick to take effect and quick to recover from, and no sickness afterwards. But as I said, if you’re anxious don’t be afraid to ask for something to calm you.

Pixiepop14 · 30/07/2025 23:05

At my surgery last week, I was first as I was the most complex.

TaupeMember · 30/07/2025 23:06

Glad you're feeling calmer op, and.have found a good tv programme to get into.
