To find Deal or No Deal ridiculously overdramatic for what is essentially just opening boxes?

It’s literally just guessing numbers, yet they act like it’s life or death. The dramatic pauses, the tense music, the contestants in tears - it’s all a bit much isn’t it?

I am irrationally irritated by the contestants wishing each other “good luck”. We listen to their convoluted reasoning for picking box number 17, then AFTER they have picked it, the person with box 17 wishes them “good luck” before opening it. I find it maddening. There’s no point wishing them lunch now you numpty, they already picked! Wishing them luck before they chose a box would make some kind of sense but afterwards is just dumb. And the whole thing is dumb and it annoys me that it has the ability to irritate me. It’s a me problem

its good fun but even less skill needed than tipping point.

You can only have a go at tipping the point if your can answer questions, so they are completely different. There's skill in tipping point.

Completely agree. It’s absolutely awful. A lady I look after often has it on and I just can’t stand it or understand why ANYONE would watch dramatic people pick bloody boxes, and take bloody ages to do so.

Pomegranatecarnage · 30/07/2025 18:52

It’s ridiculous! So silly.

If you think it's just luck in choosing numbers in Deal or no Deal then you need to study Benfield's Law. DorND is a predetermined sequence of events that contestants have to find a way to connect to through harnessing the power of the collective. Holding hands can work, as can finding a fellow contestant who had a cat of the same name, as can many things. The skill is finding that connection to guide the box opening. Many try, few succeed.

Love it.

But I love Carrot in the Box more!

I write the board out in a grid — helps me spot when not to deal. This is it http://judyverse303.gumroad.com/l/rxlgs. Enjoy!!!

The bit I never understood is when they go on to open the rest of the boxes… what’s the point of that?! It’s irrelevant what could have happened

ChristmasinBrighton · 12/12/2025 15:21

I just don’t get it

It is the total utility curve turned into entertainment. Broadly twice as much money does not provide twice as much benefit (utility).
My students and I used Deal or No Deal and other models to explore the Meaning of the Total Utility Curve.

I used to love how life or death seriously Noel Edmunds would take it and what crap psychics the contestants were.

Jenny: I'll have Avril's box please.
Noel, Avril, manifest a low amount.
Avril: This is DEFINITELY the 1p.
Avril opens box to reveal £250,000.

JohnTheRevelator · 12/12/2025 17:18

Totally agree. I know several people who go nuts over this programme, but personally I just don't see the attraction! Give me a good old fashioned quiz show any day! 😂

BertieBotts · 12/12/2025 17:29

The drama and waffling on is the point. People find that entertaining to watch. Nobody would watch it if they just opened the boxes without the patter.

flatfootedfred · 12/12/2025 17:35

I used to work in an office with incredibly clever people where the workload was sometimes sporadic (crisis management stuff - either there was something very urgent and important to do, or nothing). On quiet afternoons we used to turn the TV on and watch Deal or No Deal and we were all HOOKED. It’s utterly addictive.

It's a) so everyone can see there's been no "cheating", and b) to make sure each episode is an hour long.

LoisGriffinskitchen · 12/12/2025 17:48

id love to take part for the free hotel and bar etc. under no illusion about skill though. It’s sheer chance.

MeouwKing · 12/12/2025 19:05

I am always on the Banker's side. I love it when the contestant turns down 10 grand and then opens 100K followed by 50k and has only 3k box left at best.
