Things that most people can do and I can't

I can't-
Send or receive texts (don't have a mobile phone)
Change a wheel
Do self service at checkouts
Do 'pay at pump' at petrol stations
But I can-
Grow potatoes
Darn a hole in the elbow of a jumper
Sing the tenor part of The Messiah
Make and repair clothes
Embroider

Anyone else not quite fit into the 21st century?

Parallel park, I Iearnt to pass my test but I have never done since. People that can I hold in very high regard - that stuff if magic 😅

It wasn't taught when I was learning so I was never taught, but I always seemed to need to park near a couple or more men who all seemed to think it was hilarious me trying.

So I would wind my window down, say, "OK you have had a laugh, help me park this now" and they would.

I got used to what they were saying and eventually it clicked.

OreoBoo · 29/07/2025 10:09

I was going to say I can cook all kinds of things but I can't boil an egg, but I'm not sure I can't, it's just I don't like boiled eggs and never learned!

I don't drive but I actually probably would struggle with learning to, I couldn't even tie my shoes until well into adulthood. I am not so coordinated at all and have little spatial awareness.

But I have a degree in Law.

Remember names, see in pictures in my minds eye (I wonder if this explains the difficulties in remembering names!), remember gossip. Judge distances, sleep!

If it that simple for me I think I'd have mastered it by now 🙄

Sorry, I didn't mean that to sound critical. I meant you might find you don't actually need to teach your daughter and that she can just do it. You have probably developed a mental block - a bit like a phobia - for some reason.

Change a wheel
Change a bike tyre

Wishing14 · 29/07/2025 10:18

@3luckystarsthats because if it’s full you tilt your head down. I used to put my head back to swallow and was god knows how old before I realised you have to tilt your head forward to swallow a pill! 😂

Sahara123 · 29/07/2025 10:19

Mine learned to swallow pills by practicing with a pile of sultanas until they got it!
I have a trick which seems to work: put pill in mouth, take a mouthful of water, put your chin onto your chest and swallow!

Things I've tried but can't do - whistle, knit, cook rice, climb ladders, headstands.

Things I can do - rebuild car engine, draft clothing patterns, know which direction I am facing by looking at a tree.

Tell me more about the tree

I wouldn't say most people can change a wheel. Maybe most drivers can, but that's not most people.

I've never changed a wheel. I call the AA if I have a very flat tyre. If it's not totally flat, but going down slowly, I have an air compressor so I keep topping it up until I can get to a tyre fitters for repair or replacement.

I know in theory how to change one, but I don't consider it safe to grovel on the side of a road next to fast moving traffic to do so. There is also the risk of the car coming down on top of you if the jack isn't on level ground (on a couple of occasions I've had a flat on very dodgy ground with potholes)

The AA will have ramps to use if necessary on bad ground and will position their vehicles behind with warning lights for safety, or if necessary tow to a safer place before changing the wheel.

Look up definition of “can’t” maybe OP?

Yay !! That’s brilliant I did not know why it worked to fill the glass up to the very very top but that’s why it works!

I see people doing big gulping back swallows and wonder why they are making it difficult. Thanks for explaining that to me.

I was very embarrassed recently because I was at work with an adult with learning disabilities & we came back to my car to find a tyre completely flat. I started filling out an online RAC breakdown form but he said "right, get out everything you have to change a tyre". Luckily we'd recently bought the car so the garage had put everything needed in the boot, neatly organised. I got it out and he changed the tyre in about 10 mins. I watched closely so I could probably do it again. He showed me how to feel under the car to know where to put the jack, and as you dont get under the car at any point, even if the jack did fail you're unlikely to be injured

Almostwelsh · 29/07/2025 15:28

Presumably you were in a car park do didn't have traffic zooming past you while doing this.

Although last time I had a flat in a car park (a hospital car park) the ground was so terrible it wouldn't hold a jack level. The AA man had to put the car up on some ramps to stabilise it, he couldn't use a jack on its own either.

Yes, car park

I also can’t recognise people I’ve met many times before, (worse if I see them out of context) I can’t see pictures in my head either and I’ve only just realised this but I can’t hear a tune !!. I have a loud internal monologue though.

I think you're my MN twin 😊

I can't:
Iron
Sew
Draw
Flower arrange
Do times tables (any of them)
Keep my desk tidy (or my room, really)
Do anything to do with cars apart from putting in petrol
Type properly
Remember people's names unless I know them well

I can:
Speed read/skim with understanding
Write (as part of my profession) with excellent grammar and vocabulary
Take good photos (snaps, I mean, not professionally)
Debate
Decorate rooms and dress tastefully
