Has Covid stopped young people from knowing how to dress for an occasion?

I see it all the time - so many young people don’t make the effort to look nice anymore. Not for weddings, birthdays, other celebratory occasions, it seems to be a “thing” to look like you have made no effort at all.

Is it a Covid thing? They missed a formative period of going out and now they don’t know how to dress for an occasion? That’s all I can think of.

It’s not even about fashions changing eg., people don’t really wear heels anymore, it’s that they literally turn up to events in clothes I would clean my bathroom in.

I think it’s a real shame to be honest!

I’m on a cruise Facebook page and every second post seems to be about the evening dress code. A lot questioning why they can’t wear jeans or shorts, people of all ages not just young people.

Why? Presumably it’s warm, why shouldn’t people wear shorts to dinner?

Would you wear shorts to a fine dining restaurant in the UK?

There’s quite the difference between a cruise ship and a fine dining restaurant (by your own admission, it’s an informal ship). I would absolutely wear shorts to an informal restaurant while on holiday.

I love heels but I am at a time in my life when I can take them or leave them.
i recently went out to dinner in a strapless dark blue denim midi dress and some clean white trainers .
I think that it was a good compromise between comfort and being dressed for the occasion
I still think shoes should be worn for more formal occasions such as weddings , funerals and graduations
Dd graduated recently and I wore a midi dress with kitten heels . I used to dislike kitten heels but I just can’t be arsed to walk around in 3 1/2 or 4 inch heels anymore .
It is a shame because I have some really beautiful shoes with heels

What’s wrong with shorts? Antiquated rules.

There is a difference between bermuda shorts, sweat shorts and tailored shorts. The latter are smart. The others, no.

My 18yo girl wears jeans and t-shirts everywhere. She shines her DM boots though. And irons, if the occasion demands it. Nothing to do with COVID, it’s just how she maintains her comfort. She hasn’t had cause to go to funeral or wedding recently, so I can’t comment on that. She’s not likely to be in a formal setting anytime soon. She didn’t go to her prom because she hated the dress code.

Is there anything Covid can’t be blamed for?

People of all ages were quite relaxed before Covid, not just young people.

Yoy can't blame Covid for everything. It was a year. Yabu.

It was much longer than a year here in Ireland.

ladyamy · 28/07/2025 20:43

Bloody Covid can’t be blamed for everything 🤦🏻‍♀️

Why is MN always obsessed with "I could see her labia" type comments about other women's outfits?

I don't tend to spend all day staring at another woman's crotch to notice

Octavia64 · 28/07/2025 20:58

I went to Glyndeborne last year.

lots of dresses and trainers.

more generally, 90s grunge is back. People are wearing what I wore in my teens which is baggy jeans, crop tops and a fuck ton of make up.

no it’s not dressing “nicely” but neither was punk or goth or emo.

zaxxon · 28/07/2025 21:06

I dream of a day when people can wear literally whatever they like, without it being taken as some sort of message or signal. I mean really - if someone turns up in jeans to a funeral, is it likely that they got dressed thinking, "Actually I didn't like the deceased much so ha ha, this choice of ourfit'll show him!" Or, much more likely, did they just want to not be uncomfortable?

It would be so cool if people could show up to work in a three-piece suit or an old band t-shirt or a bias cut Ghost dress, as they liked, and no one would think anything of it. Maybe one day ...

Nothing to do with covid. Lack of parental / family role models and general low standards.

It’s to do with how fashion progresses. It’s nothing to do with parenting.

Society has become much more casual and home orientated. Hence people wear more casual clothes.

SweetFancyMoses · 28/07/2025 21:40

One of my 20 something sons dresses like an absolute hobo. He looks so scruffy. His brother is less trampy, but always in really casual gear. (Excepting for work for both)

My 20 something nieces are never out of yoga type gear. Costs a fortune, is very put together, but very casual.

ZaZathecat · 28/07/2025 22:07

This is exactly what my grandparents said about my generation (minus the Covid bit) because we wore jeans for everything

Especially with the plural of ‘fly’. Very low standards.

I understand the point you are making. But by saying that you are guilty of the same thing… why are you concerned about others opinions when it has absolutely no impact on you?!

I think when people have project their ideas onto others about societal expectations, or when they comment on others women’s bodies ie ‘camel toe’ it impacts everyone negatively
