To share the dead hedgehog stink?

A hedgehog came into my garden overnight a few nights ago and was dead when I found it in the morning.
I put it in the bin just to get it out of the way as the dog was coming out to investigate, and it fucking reeks. I’ve moved the bin to the end of the garden so now it’s stinking out the neighbours garden and I’m worried they’ll hate me!

I have a week to go before that bin is collected AIBU to leave it stinking them out?! If I move my bin back it’s outside my kitchen window and honestly I can still smell it from there even with it at the other end of the garden so I think we’d barf if it moved back.

It’s not near my neighbours house just the end/ side of their garden…

Side note: can I diminish the slowly rotting hedgehog smell at all..?! Should I have put him in food waste?!

Wait till you smell a dead badger

honeyandbutterontoast · 26/07/2025 17:48

your bin will be full of maggots now I expect. Just warning you! It will be a bit grim when you get the bin emptied.

(Had a cat who used to bring home a lot of dead things!)

BlueMum16 · 26/07/2025 17:48

Did you double bag it?

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 26/07/2025 17:49

Hmmmm. A week is a long time, and it's rather warm out. I fear things will only get worse for you (especially when the maggots hatch!)
Do you have the stomach to dig it out of the bin & bury it? Or if not you could dig it out and double bag it in bin liners before putting it back in the bin?
Sadly both my suggestions involve digging it out the bin. Be brave!

honeyandbutterontoast · 26/07/2025 17:51

I used to triple bag anything the cat brought home but we would still have the maggot issue 🤢 Best not to lift the bin lid unless you have to at this point…

murasaki · 26/07/2025 18:00

That sounds grim.

But until a skunk has got the lid off your cool box and sprayed in it, you do not know the meaning of stink. Still traumatised 20 years later.

JMSA · 26/07/2025 18:03

Couldn’t you have bagged it up and put it in a public bin? They are emptied much more regularly, maybe even daily.

JMSA · 26/07/2025 18:03

Poor hedgehog. I wonder if it was thirsty 😢

cecinestpasunepipe · 26/07/2025 18:04

I would pour a bottle of bleach over it! Not very environmentally friendly but sometimes drastic measures are required. Don't bury it, your dog or foxes will only dig it up again.

Not round my way, they're not!

WonderingWanda · 26/07/2025 18:05

I think it would've made more sense to bury the hedgehog.

Poor hedgehog. I wonder if it was thirsty 😢

I know- it was when it was very hot so since then we’ve left a little dual Tupperware with water and a bit of dog food outside the garden fence near the open land in the hope it helps any of the hedgehog family

I can’t dig in the bin today… I’ve just recovered from a stomach bug and think that would be the end 🤢

might attempt bleach although I don’t own any as I’m usually a bleach avoider but honestly the stench

Did you double bag it?

This would’ve been sensible @BlueMum16but I didn’t even single bag it… in my defence I’d been up all night being sick and then there was a dead hedgehog and a dog ready to eat it so it was an emergency action which I’m now living to regret

Oh no, I hope you are feeling better. If you can get some Jeyes fluid tip some of that in....it has such a strong smell it will mask everything else. Then once the bin has been collected give it a good clean.
