Just been made redundant - what are my rights ?

I’ve just been made redundant, along with a bunch of others in my company.

It’s the first time and there were no signs this was about to happen. I also don’t know the reasons yet, I have my chat next week.

I am very pissed off. I’ve been there for less than a year.

I am in business development and my team and I were opening a new territory. We had an extremely lengthy ramp up period - of 1 and a half years. This was because we were seen as ‘ pioneering ‘ a new market. So a lot of our role was about creating noise, understanding the dynamics of the new market, as well as closing business in the new market. We worked extremely hard on this and identified gaps our product had in the market, as well as ways we could potentially overcome them. We also signed up new customers. We were told several times that we were pioneers and part of our role was to find out what is going on etc.

I was on the cusp of signing a massive contract and now I’ve just been dropped. Most people in my team have been made redundant, except one.

I am absolutely fuming. Is there anything I can actually do ? I won’t get any of the money for the contract I was about to get a signature on ( that was absolutely huge ). And I think I’ll get a minimum payment of one month pay.

I can go in more detail if required. But is there even any point in contacting a solicitor ? Or can they do what they want here ?

@Pinkcherry26I can’t claim UD as I haven’t been there two years. I can only try a discrimination claim, but I think it would be hard. There were things that happend during my tenure which I didn’t think were particularly great and I did feel I was treated unfairly.

but I’m not sure how this played into the decision not to keep me, but keep my other colleague.

@Yesyourecorrecti am 100 percent being made redundant next week. What’s the difference ? I know it’s happening. 100 percent

OP posts:
Yesyourecorrect · 26/07/2025 15:54

You say the majority have been made redundant (although transpires no one has been made redundant, just put on risk). And they are all men? And no disabilities?

You said you have been told you are “at risk”

ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 15:55

the others have been made redundant. 1 is left. All male.

have the others been made redundant
or
like you
been told they are “at risk” of redundancy

ExtraOnions · 26/07/2025 15:57

Are you in a Trade Union ? Get some advice from them.

ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 15:58

Omg I know I’m being made redundant !! The process os that they tell you that you’re at risk, then they have the meeting and tell you that you’re being made redundant.

in my invite it even states that they’ll explain how they came to the difficult decision etc.

OP posts:
ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 15:58

@Yesyourecorrectthe others have been made redundant!! Like I already explained. They had the at risk thing and then the meeting where they were told why etc. like I just explained.

no trade union.

Op being “at risk of redundancy” does not mean inevitable.

But assuming you are, any claim for discrimination would be daft. The entire team, all of whom men, aside from one, have also been made redundant (well, not yet!)

Yesyourecorrect · 26/07/2025 16:02

Well actually no - you haven’t explained that.

So all the others were told “you are at risk” and all told that been made redundant aside one remaining.

You are the only one still “at risk” with your meeting next week. I wonder why they singled you out to wait

KrisAkabusi · 26/07/2025 16:02

You're making this really hard. @yesyourecorrect Has just been asking questions to give you proper advice. Shes not being nasty. I know it's stressful, but you have not been at all clear about the process. If you had explained everything in your subsequent posts from the start, it would have been easier.

Do you know why everyone else in the team was told at the same time, but you weren't? Are you being treated differently?

AnSolas · 26/07/2025 16:02

Yesyourecorrect · 26/07/2025 15:50

Huh?

nasty?

You haven’t been made redundant op

Your op is very clear that you have been made redundant and posters have been advising you as such.

I asked how long you’d been there and whether it was your team

and you think that is “nasty” 😕

Yesyourecorrect · Today 15:45

ohdeeri · Today 15:44
I have been informed I’m at risk and they’ll explain the process next week. I wish it wasn’t so, but I think I’m out.

So you haven’t been made redundant!!!

You ^

In the real world of work the OP has been made redundant.

The employer will tick all the boxes that need ticking and remove the roles her team carry out.

The OP is allowed it feel lost and sensitive while she takes everything onboard.

lemoncurd2025 · 26/07/2025 16:05

I get it - we were told at risk but it was a given from what they said, our whole department was going
they followed process but from the first meeting it was very clear none of us were staying
it was basically “we are closing your department so it won’t exist any more and setting up a new one 250 miles away”

ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 16:05

The one remaining was told he was not at risk.

I haven’t had the meeting, because I was away.

everyone else was told they’re at risk and then said bye bye to, in the meeting- which is what will happen to me.

Yes exactly. It’s very clear what’s coming - hence why I said I’ve been made redundant.

But anyway, long story short. I can’t do fuck all.

Ok so now clear

OP, spend weekend job hunting.
you were there 8 months
all but one have been made redundant, all of whom are men and no disabilities. So a discrimination claim will be futile

Yesyourecorrect · 26/07/2025 16:08

ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 16:07

What do you mean?

All you can do is job hunt

ohdeeri · 26/07/2025 16:10

@YesyourecorrectI mean like, I can’t argue that I need to be paid on this work I’ve put months into etc. they can just pull the rug out, whenever they want. I can’t bring any kind of claim for breach of contract / discrimination or anything else.
even though, they’ve not kept their promises and are just getting rid of me, as I’m on the cusp of a massive contract.

OP posts:
Yesyourecorrect · 26/07/2025 16:16

Sadly being “on the cusp” of a “massive deal” means squat all.

OP, spend the weekend tarting up your CV and job hunting

I was so pissed off too
I have worked from home FT since 2020 as a reasonable adjustment so the place moving didn’t really matter - except they’re refusing any home workers

Honestly, it doesn’t mean squat all in any way.

Oh Op, yes it does.

They have made the team redundant

the “massive deal” you were on the “cusp” of delivering is dead in the water
