To think this is hysterical nutrition advice?

I eat chicken and fish most days but have a two days per week where I go meat free. On these days I often have 50g (uncooked) wholegrain pasta, tablespoon of homemade pesto and some veg such as broccoli, courgette, spinach, mushroom.
No added salt but a sprinkle of parmesan, pepper, garlic and herbs.

Sometimes I vary it with lentil soup.
It used to be cheese salad sandwiches but I wanted to up my fiber!

Unsolicited advice from colleague insists this is going to make me fat and metabolically ill.
I am not fat, and I don't have allergies or sensitivities, but a most definitely AM confused.
I am aware that it is none of his business, but I am wondering if this is a popular view of food now? It seems like the world has gone a bit bonkers with faddy diets.

Is this something else I haven't caught up with yet? Surely this is over the top?

Did you tell your colleague that you ate 50g of uncooked pasta?
Or that you weighed 50g of uncooked pasta, and then cooked it?

If he is imagining you eating raw pasta, he may have a point 😆

I don't tell him much, he's a gossip!

It happened very quickly whilst we were busy doing other stuff. He pulled me up when I uttered the word pasta and I said it was a good high fiber meal with veggies. I didn't discuss it further as didn't get the chance - he just tore into as 'disregulating', wheat being potentially cancerous and very likely the cause of global obesity. I didn't think he was doing nuance.
Maybe high fiber pasta is synonymous with jam donut to him?

If a work colleague suggests you might get fat, or makes any comment at all about your body or how you look, that is totally unprofessional and possibly grounds for a complaint to HR.
Is this man usually a misogynistic prick who feels entitled to comment on how women look?

If he does it again, fix him with a hard stare and say "please don't make comments about my body in the workplace".
He will probably back track and say he was only joking and then blame you for being too sensitive.
When that happens say "It wasn't funny. If you do it again I will consider further action," then end the conversation by walking away.

This. Sounds weird.

Pasta does terrible things to me. Unfortunately, because I love it. Idiots online are just applying their own reckons to everyone. Best to ignore. I’d go further and never discuss food with him at all.

LadyMoglet · 26/07/2025 15:09

No not a comment about my body in particular, aside from this he is a decent guy believe it or not, just a bit trend focused and gossipy.

He sounds like a typical prat. One once told me off in the office for drinking tap water (in the UK) because it was "full of nasties" and he couldn't even tell me what, specifically.

It sounds like your colleague has food issues and is projecting his own anxiety around eating. That’s a perfectly normal and healthy diet.

That said, last time I took dc to the dentist, dentist said no fruit allowed, only meat and nuts as snacks. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We’ve ignored that.

I have heard that actually, apparently it's terrible for the teeth unless eaten alongside a meal

LadyMoglet · 26/07/2025 15:12

Pasta does terrible things to me. Unfortunately, because I love it.

How does that work? It fills me nicely and keep me satiated all night. I suppose it would be different if I had a sensitivity though.

A lot of people have lost touch with their bodies, nervous system and have damaged metabolisms and reward systems.

It’s sad but I am not sure what can be done. They can’t listen to their body anymore about what to eat, when to eat. And so resort to increasingly weird coping mechanisms.

Meadowfinch · 26/07/2025 15:20

Ignore him, he's talking nonsense.

You have described a balanced diet with plenty of fruit & veg, enough protein and a suitable amount of fat.

You can vary the amount of processed carbs depending on how energetic a life you lead, and on if you are gaining weight or not.

Personally I find I don't need many carbs when the weather is very hot, but I do if it's cold and/or I go running.

Everyone is different.

DinoLil · 26/07/2025 15:21

I've just reheated some veg chow mein from last night's takeaway for my very late lunch and put the rest in the freezer, so sort of pasta and veg but with more oil and salt.

I reheated salt and pepper chips for my breakfast.

Tell that to your colleague to think about! 😆

Yes, it does for you. Not me. You sound a bit like him, right now.

ThatsABitExcessive · 26/07/2025 15:23

I eat pasta nearly every day and I’m not overweight 🙄

I thought you might have celiac or something. Jeeez.

it was unsolicited advice?
I think two of us were saying can't wait to get home, one was excited to be having a barbecue and I said I was looking forward to my pasta night. He burst in at this point. He didn't try to lecture about the woman's barbecue, just my bloody pasta.

You sound as believable and not a very confident person so I wonder if he sensed it and did this deliberately- trying to confuse you.

BreatheAndFocus · 26/07/2025 15:29

LadyMoglet · 26/07/2025 14:27

Sorry, I forgot to add I presume he is referring to the demon carbs.

There are some real loons out there, talking crap about carbs 🙄 They’re beyond tedious. I’d have laughed in his face.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/07/2025 15:29

Oh, you are cooking the pasta. I was a bit bemused for a minute there.

Katemax82 · 26/07/2025 15:29

Years ago (2006) my husband and 2 stepsons registered at a new doctors and had an appointment to talk about our health/lifestyle. The nurse was a bit ridiculous, upon hearing the kids eat a packet of Crisps a day she over the top was like "you should be having them once a week if that!! You wont be able to fit through that door before long!!" This was said to an 8 year old and 12 year old! As adults neither of them are fat! They eat whatever they want

This sounds incredibly joyless.

But no, nothing terrible about it nutritionally I think. Ignore them.

verycloakanddaggers · 26/07/2025 15:30

Oh just don't give it any thought, you don't have to even give it head room.

People believe all sorts of stuff, just leave them to it.

LadyMoglet · 26/07/2025 15:31

I know this is AIBU but lord knows how this translates to me being under-confident.

But no, he seems to have a 'passion' for food science i think, he is very nice otherwise.

"shut the fuck up about my diet" would work for me.

How is a bowl of pasta twice a week going to make you fat? And what exactly does “metabolically ill” mean? That is not a recognised medical diagnosis.

Metabolic syndrome is a diagnosis, but the idea that it's caused by eating pasta twice a week is bollocks. Sound like he's just one of the "carbs are the devil" nutters. I sometimes wonder if these people are aware that for the last 12000 years or so, ever since this new-fangled farming thing came in, most humans in most places (certainly the less well-off ones) have lived mostly on a staple carb. Don't think many of those medieval peasants living mostly on bread were fat. Or the nineteenth-century Irish ones with the potatoes. Or the folks in Asia with the rice. OP sounds healthy and fine.

Pesto pasta with herbs and parmesan is bloody delicious. As are the side veg mentioned.

What is it about this that's 'joyless' exactly? You'd swear the op had said she was having a 2cm slice of celery with a side of dust 🙄

50 grams of pasta is pretty frugal. Wholewheat pasta is vile. I like certain veg with pasta dishes such as aubergine, tomatos... broccoli nah. And no salt...just sounds really unappealing to me. But it doesn't matter...I'm not the one eating it so enjoy op. I'm sure plenty of stuff I eat will be unappealing to others

Cososom · 26/07/2025 15:52

He sounds like a tedious tiktok protein bro. Ignore.
