Police should be allowed to tow away cars when the alarm is going off in the middle of the night

I jest. But I am feeling slightly murderous right now. It stopped for approx 30 seconds after going off for half an hour. Then started again and never stopped. Pray for me that it stops.

Why jest?

where I live, if your alarm goes off for more than 10 minutes any time day or night, you can fined.

steff13 · 26/07/2025 01:58

Don't they stop after a few minutes?

TheEndlessNight · 26/07/2025 01:58

I disagree with police involvement op. It should be our right as citizens that we can go out and whack the car with a bat.

Signed from someone with a neighbour who has a dodgy car alarm.

isitmytime · 26/07/2025 02:00

The police can try to get in touch with the owner/insured party if you give them the reg. no guarantee the person would answer the phone especially this late.

my neighbours house alarm went off for 2hours just last week around 5pm. They were in the house/out the back garden, ignoring it until someone went to the door!!

It's not a police matter, it's an environmental health matter. Council are supposed to deal with it.

This one stopped after 30 mins. Then started again. It's stopped now

Yeah they should, and they should also tow away cars whose owner has parked like a tw*t.

Interesting. I’m sure there are good reasons for keeping them separate, but at times like these our single system does seem efficient. Really only works in sleepy towns though, where the police aren’t busy. I imagine that would be the biggest immediate downside to one umbrella service.

There was one at my old flat, went off for at least a full day. I think someone had left it for the weekend/buggered off on holiday. It was an old banger, with a fully functional alarm. It was egged in the middle of the night, I assume by another annoyed neighbour. It must have been hellish to get off after it sat for a few days. Well deserved IMO.

MidnightPatrol · 26/07/2025 08:14

Given the police don’t seem able to respond to actual crimes and don’t consider noise complaints their issues at all - highly unlikely they would involve themselves!

GRex · 26/07/2025 08:16

I think car alarms should be banned entirely, instead the car should phone its owner who can then go to see if it is being broken into, or more likely is upset by the indignity of a heavy vehicle passing within 1m of it.

TranceNation · 26/07/2025 08:25

Just imagining the police towing it away disturbing every neighborhood it's towed through to it's final destination where it then becomes the problem of the neighborhood where the final destination is. It's kicking the can down the road isn't it really.

It would be sooooo satisfying though

Sounds like an excellent use of limited police resources. Should they prioritise it over burglary or assault, or just if they’re otherwise sitting around sipping pina coladas?

I live in a sleepy town where we only have 2 police officers on duty at night and our police station is only open 4 hours a day and doesn't have a custody suite.

If they nick someone, they have to take them to a custody suite 15 miles away and book them in, and while they're doing that, we have no police officers at all!

My post literally started with 'I jest' 🤣 sorry you're grumpy.

A couple of years ago we had one that went on for over 30 hours non stop. I was close to putting a brick through the window so I could open the bonnet and disconnect the battery, I doubt anyone would have grassed me up!

TheBuffetInspector · 26/07/2025 09:29

I feel your pain. A HMO resident who doesn't even live on our street parks his banger outside ours. All night the bloody alarm was going off. It would stop for about 30 seconds then just start again.
I did call the police... Couldn't do anything... I was almost begging them to at least disconnect the battery!

For the person complaining about police resources, the police agreed that if it was a raucous party keeping the entire street up with music, then they'd have powers. Unfortunately no power over a car partying alone.

So many letters under the window wipers next morning. He started parking it elsewhere. It's abandoned and smashed up now. Not by my hand!

Riverswims · 26/07/2025 12:24

you want to pay more taxes to finance that do you? I heard one last night and I didn’t one think of involving the police 🤦🏽‍♀️

Well funnily enough nor did I 🙄

Noise complaints should revert to being a police matter I think. Hope you get a good nights sleep tonight OP.

foodymcfoodface · 26/07/2025 14:03

I have a car alarm that goes off randomly when the battery is low. I’ve since found that it’ll be a big job to disable it! They need to make it easy to turn off car alarms ☹️
