I had a blood test yesterday and it hurt as many often do but I was left with a very big swelling a while after-pic doesn’t really do it justice tbh-it was a big lump and today it’s incredibly bruised. Still swollen but definitely reduced. I’ve often had mild bruising but nothing like this.

Yes, that's normal. About 1 out of 10 of mine end up with bruising (i have 2 blood tests a month).

Eenameenadeeka · 25/07/2025 23:44

This happens to me pretty much every time, but I bruise like a peach haha. Never had any long term harm from it.

Nursingadvice · 25/07/2025 23:44

I’ve had hundreds of blood tests and the only time I have ever had bruises like that is after long inpatient stays and problems with canulas.

ninjahamster · 25/07/2025 23:45

I have regular blood tests and rarely bruise but my mother bruises just like you have. Every time!

JDM625 · 25/07/2025 23:47

Did you bend your arm up after the test or leave it straight?
The person taking the blood might have partially removed the needle before putting enough pressure on it.
Do you take blood thinners or drink alot of alcohol?

ThinWomansBrain · 25/07/2025 23:48

Not often, but I have had bruising like that occasionally from a blood test.

I don't recall if connected to bad bruising, but UCH used to have volunteers taking blood. Weird? I mean who'd volunteer for that other than vampires?

ARichtGoodDram · 25/07/2025 23:50

That is quite a swelling!

I bruise like a peach after blood tests but never swelling like that.

Is it painful? Have you full movement in your elbow?

Infracat · 26/07/2025 00:42

This happened to my son recently. I was shocked how bad it was. It healed quite quickly though.

No, I kept it straight. She did say “oooh” as she put it in, I didn’t look though 😂 I don’t drink alcohol at all and not on blood thinners.

I have regular blood tests. Sometimes I get no bruising, sometimes it’s bruises like yours. It’s normal

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/07/2025 01:46

Not normal and depends on the skill of the person taking the bloods. Who took them?

I have veins that refuse to give out my blood apparently. There's only one nurse who takes them from me now with no issues at all.

before I was told this I had awful experience where nurse tried 2 times each arm then got a dr who tried twice in my hand till he got the blood. The nurse said ‘I'm glad I’m not paying for the needles you've wasted'

VoulezVouz · 26/07/2025 02:04

That is fine, OP. Your vein just bled a bit under the skin. It should clear away in a week or so.

vivainsomnia · 26/07/2025 08:45

It's happened to me a couple of times. Oddly, last time was when I hardly felt the needle going in and I told the nurse she was great! I had one this week and there's nothing at all. It's very strange.

Thanks everyone
