Does anyone actually do this?

We go abroad in a few weeks. It’s our one big holiday of the year and I always look forward to it but in turn, always get anxious something will go wrong!

I’ve been wittering to dh about it as I’m worried our youngest will pick something up from nursery before we go. It would be just our luck and I know chickenpox is rife in the area at the moment. He said if I’m that concerned then keep her off the week before. In an ideal world I’d much rather do that but it would then mean taking another week of annual leave purely for the purpose of my actual annual leave. Is that wild or do people really do it? And have you ever had to cancel or postpone a holiday because your child has been unwell?

My DD is lucky that I'm her childcare. Her youngest has previously been under the weather, so we've kept her off, for her to recover and not pick anything else up. It would be madness to take time off to isolate. I think to help your anxiety, just keep reasoning it out. Always buy insurance at the time of booking. Feeling a bit nervous helps us focus and be on time.

Insurance is sorted but I’d be so gutted if we couldn’t go. There isn’t another free week over summer we could change to and in any case the hotel was fully booked last time I looked.

I agree it’s madness to isolate before a holiday especially when it involves using so much more annual leave. It’s just a worry isn’t it. It would be my luck for her to come out in chickenpox the day before we go.

Just get her vaccinated?

Bit of a waste of leave. I doubt your DC will pick anything up just before the holiday. Just relax and stop fretting!

I would hate to cause you more anxiety but it happened to us. Our son broke his elbow less than 12 hours before we were due to fly to Spain for our annual family holiday. He needed surgery. We obviously couldn't go. It was awful. I still get anxious about something similar happening again & it was many years ago!
The thing is, if something like that is going to happen then it's going to happen. Live your life as normal and only worry IF it happens.
