I have lessons on Friday mornings at 10:30am. A few weeks ago I had to text him at 7am to say I couldn’t do the lesson that day as DS had been throwing up in the night so he obviously couldn’t go in school and I had no family members available to help me. He said that was ok but I had to pay him for that lesson as it was too short notice. He text me his bank details and I paid him.

Last weeks lesson he told me that he couldn’t do today as he was going away for the weekend. No problem.

Last night we booked a holiday for the 18th of August. I messaged him this morning and told him I wouldn’t be able to do the lesson on the 22nd as we were away. His reply was “no problem” then sent me his bank details to transfer the money.

AIBU to be annoyed at this? I haven given him 4 weeks notice whereas last week he had given me a weeks notice

He is taking the piss. Don't pay him.

Have you signed any paperwork and what does it say about cancelling lessons?

Imisscoffee2021 · 25/07/2025 12:13

4 weeks notice is plenty to fill but it depends as he'll be keeping that slot free for you, people tend to have same slots each week. 4 weeks is long enough to find someone though, I'd be annoyed to have to pay him, unless you've booked a block and this falls in that block?

Yeah that's a bit of a piss take. I'd reply asking what the notice period is for cancelling a lesson as you would have thought (if you dont have any paperwork to the contrary) that that notice period was sufficient.

4 weeks notice for a holiday and he is charging you is taking the P. My DH is an ADI and if someone cancels once at short notice, its a pain but he lets it go if there is a genuine reason, if it keeps happening he will charge them. If someone is going on holiday then so be it, he keeps the slot open no problem. I would be looking for another instructor but I know in most areas they are so busy and not easy to find one with spaces.

Also have you signed any Ts&Cs? I would ask for a copy
