Would be interested to know the legal reasoning when other sites are taking a different view

Rules for thee but not for me?

OP posts:
skymagentatwo · 25/07/2025 09:48

Because its pointless, i already over heard all the kids on the bus this morning sharing links to free VPN sites.

MidnightPatrol · 25/07/2025 09:50

What kind of adult content threads are there on mumsnet which would be covered by this legal change?

TwelfthOfNever · 25/07/2025 09:50

It's a stupid law. Good intention, utterly useless implementation, almost completely ineffective for purpose. Designed by people who don't know tech so had no idea how easy it is to bypass; puts your ID information into the hands of large companies that have no reason not to resell it.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 25/07/2025 09:51

Adult content includes: discussions of self harm, suicide and eating disorders...

Which crop up all over MN

So MN should have it for the whole site

But it's bullshit... and will definitely be misused by companies and avoided by simply using a VPN

Anything talking about self harm, suicide and eating disorders

It's not just about porn

Scottishdreams1991 · 25/07/2025 09:55

I managed to install a free vpn this morning to see how easy it was. In less then 5mins managed to access porn and I'm the least bit tech savy. It's quite disappointing really as I believe children need more protection
A pointless law really

Totally agree but doesn't change the legal responsibility on site operators.

I mean the VPN will be monitoring and storing your data so it's a great law for blackmailers and identity thieves.

Oh here we go with the conspiracy and fake news 😂

Thelnebriati · 25/07/2025 10:06

There is no international group of billionaire philanthropists who provide you with free internet access. If you google 'free VPN' you are likely to have your data stolen, including passwords and banking details you are daft enough to give them.
That's one reason why many companies tell their staff 'don't use a 'free' VPN on your work device'.

You are not safe on the internet if you don't understand that this is a problem.

Because mumsnet doesn’t include pornographic images or content which promotes suicide, eating disorders or self harming?

The law is quite clear on what needs to be age verified and Mumsnet doesn’t have any content that would need to be?

Not talking about - encouraging, promoting or giving instruction on.

Sites are still trying to work out what exactly the law means and how it applies to them because of how it's written

As I say, MN has discussions of self harm, suicide and eating disorders in many places and that alone requires the ID check

It covers a range of "nsfw" material including the kinds of material found on Mumsnet. I think it will be interesting if anyone reports them to ofcom.

I've just seen it defined as "talked about"

And promoting is so loose. Talking about it can be called promoting it. Talking about what you've done can be classes as instructions.

Which is the problem. It's so broad

Yep. Presumably having backed the "won't someone think of the children" law they now realise the dent it's about to make in their profit margin and OOFT should have thought of this. What price prudery.

It really doesn’t though? Can you find me one link to mumsnet with pornographic images or promoting self harm, suicide or disordered eating?

Discussing those things is fine. It’s promotion of those things that must be age verified.

Mumsnet is a well moderated forum, if any such posts are made they’ll be gone within hours, if not minutes.

spoonbillstretford · 25/07/2025 10:11

MN is a lot more pro-actively moderated than many other sites.

I think you're naive if you think content on MN won't count as Adult in terms of this poorly written law

On a currently trending thread a woman is asking how to make her unwilling husband give her cunnilingus...

That’s okay, pornographic text (even with non pornographic gifs and emojis) is not subject to age restriction.
