To think weight-loss injections should be prescribed in person only. The scale of abuse must be shocking.

Hear me out here. I have had 5 friends in their 30s and 40s tell me they're using weight-loss injections from online sources. Fine. Except one is a size 8 and another a size 10. Oh, it's so easy to get, just upload a photo of a day you looked chubbier a few years ago and change your height/ weight a bit. Out of my friends that recently told me they're taking it, the size 8 is on the highest dose. She looks ill. Only 1 is over a size 14 I'd say.

Am I being unreasonable

No-to think these medicines are not licensed for normal sized people. They might be at risk of osteoporosis, liver problems and who knows what else. It all seems dangerous and completely unregulated.

Yes- jog on op. These are important medicines helping lots of people and if people lie, that's their issue.

Correction - daughter's friend. Although not a close friend it seems

SilenceInside · 27/07/2025 14:48

There is no “counteraction” between Mounjaro and alcohol. What interaction are you referring to @RememberBeKindWithKaren? Could you indicate where you’ve seen any information about Mounjaro and alcohol, or who told you this?

pokewoman · 27/07/2025 14:49

I really don't understand how tbey manage to do that. I have a very significant amount of weight to lose and when I have used any provider I've had to send pics of me in tight fitting clothes/undies/swimsuit and a pic standing on scales with a pie e of paper with the date on

2old4thisshit · 27/07/2025 14:50

I am on my third injection pen, I am really short, my starting weight was over 13st and bmi of 33. I’ve lost 1 1/2 stone and I now 30. I get it through a chemist and sticking to the 2.5 dose for time being.

my sil is also on it, has always been on a diet of some sort but never needed it, she is looking extremely ill, near the 7st range. She won’t stop though.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 27/07/2025 14:43

@AirborneElephant yes you could well be right. But the fact people are unaware of the potential for ending up in hospital after drinking moderately to me is a sign there's a problem.

But there is no evidence of this. It is not a listed side effect, and none of the many safety trials involving hundreds of thousand of people have found any evidence that mounjaro interacts with alcohol.

It is of course possible for any individual to have a unique reaction to any drug, but suggesting that there is some sort of widespread risk to drinking while on WLI is simply not true.

KeenGreen · 27/07/2025 14:51

I don’t think you’re unreasonable to be concerned.

Hopefully the crack downs and system changes will help prevent abuse.

I’ve been on MJ since January, started at over 14st 4lb BMI 33. As of today I’m at 10st 6lb BMI just went under 25! It has been amazing for me. I just completed my first 10mg pen (it goes up to 15mg) so I’m not even on highest dose.
My company I’m with use a system of weekly check ins via video call and I have to weigh in live on the call and show the scales etc

I hope that I can lose another stone to put me firmly under 25 BMI. I’m around a 12 size now.

Not a lie. Friends daughter is now in hospital

So while she was being transported in an ambulance - this woman who isn’t a close friend of your daughter - you knew her medical issue was caused by alcohol and Mounjaro? How did you know that? Surely even at that stage she hadn’t seen a doctor, hadn’t had any bloodwork? You don’t know, I assume, if she had taken any drugs, what she had eaten, how much she had to drink, what her medical history is.

yet you were able to confidently diagnose her?

seems like bullshit to me

@BlueLimesits an odd thing to lie about. Do you want proof. It’s very very easy

The ambulance people would not tell me much ( I'm not her parent) other that they do see this and her heart rate was far too high, blood sugar too low . Asked for toast with something sugary - jam or honey. Then took her in and they'd probably need to get more fluids inside her. I won't add more to this thread. Doesn't seem appropriate.

No I agree. You are making huge leaps based on limited evidence

Ok, so she’s eaten nothing and then drunk heavily. I sincerely hope she is ok, but this is not evidence of a drug interaction.

Lots of people drink while taking Mounjaro. I do. I don’t drink as much, and I am conscious of drinking when on any medication. But I have never seen any advice that you cent drink while taking Mounjaro.

this is a prime example of scaremongering by someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

No- not interested in personal reports only scientific peer reviewed evidence.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 27/07/2025 15:42

@BlueLimesok yes you’re totally right. Thanks

Arraminta · 27/07/2025 16:01

It's the simple fact that using this drug makes you slim that infuriates people. If Tirzepatide had been found to help clear your sinuses, or cure peptic ulcers, people couldn't have cared less who was taking it.

2old4thisshit · 27/07/2025 16:10

@TryingAgainAgainAgain
I'm not sure tbh, she has kept it hidden for a long period of time, only recently has told my brother. We saw her at a party a few months back and it was quite shocking seeing her, she’s lost a lot more since then.

This much is verrrrrrrry obvious.

Agree.

My youngest daughter's friend is now in an ambulance because she was taking mounjaro and wasn't aware how it counteracts with even moderate amounts of alcohol.

I very much doubt that.

I'm sitting here with a glass of wine waiting for the England game to start. I've carried in drinking a (moderate) amount of alcohol throughout being on MJ. As have all my friends who are taking it.

I'm very sorry if she's been taken ill and admitted to hospital but I don't think it can simply be an interaction between MJ and alcohol otherwise I'd be in hospital every weekend

LaurieFairyCake · 27/07/2025 18:33

There is no problem with MJ and alcohol. I drank the entire 14 months on it in moderate amounts. This will be a person specific anecdote.

Same here. I belong to a FB Mounjaro group with hundreds of members. No reported issues with having a few drinks. I was at a family wedding recently and had a right skinful a few, and was absolutely fine.

Annoyeddd · 27/07/2025 18:57

I would have thought if you were okay drinking a certain amount of alcoholic drink at the higher weight then you would tolerate less at a lower body weight plus if you hardly ate you would be drinking on an empty stomach plus the effects of lower blood sugar could cause a problem in some people plus acute pancreatitis is a risk of both alcohol and mountjaro. So not impossible.
A lot of non medical prescribers are being heavily persuaded by gyms and beauty salons to prescribe (a big no from me)

You might not believe this but my grandparents were advised by their doctor to take up smoking during WW2 to combat 'war nerves'. My grandpa was in a reserved manual occupation in a large city that was a target for bombing, and due to his job there was no option to move anywhere safer. They smoked till the end of their lives - they lived to their late 80s, dying within weeks of each other just before the Millennium, and interestingly, didn't die of smoking-related illness.

If you look at vintage cigarette adverts there are lots that recommend smoking for its calming effect, appetite suppressing qualities and even as a soother for coughs!

But they didn't actually do any of those things, unlike WLI which are treating obesity.

As I mentioned earlier, cigarettes do suppress the appetite and provide a 'hit' that is calming, it's just that the 'side effects' of smoking them are too dangerous to warrant taking up smoking for those benefits.
