To think if you’re going to launch a new political party and want to make a splash, you’d think up a name before doing so

Just that really.

It just smacks of something half-arsed and ill-conceived.

Not expecting a full policy agenda but having a name should be bare minimum.

And Labour.

Although it’s interest rather than paying. Still high though.

And I’ve just read it now has more members than Reform.

R0ckandHardPlace · 27/07/2025 11:08

They haven’t announced that they’ve FORMED a party, they’ve announced their INTENTION to form a new party and the members will choose the name. It is a democratic process.

We are so used to being dictated to by powerful people who call the shots, that people don’t seem to be able to wrap their heads around the concept of democracy. If this new party is for the people, then it will be the people who choose the name, the constitution, the leaders and the policies.

This mock incredulity is very tiresome.

I think a paying mechanism could change it but still, it is in just numbers the highest I think then.

People signing up to a mailing list is enough to become a member of a political party?

They may regret that when it comes to name-voting time.

SpottyAardvark · 27/07/2025 11:17

The new party is already a complete shambles and it hasn’t properly launched yet. First, Sultana jumped the gun by announcing it and claiming she would co-lead it before Corbyn had agreed to anything. Then Corbyn launched it without a name or a logo or an organisation or any policies or anything else and very conspicuously without the input of the supposed co-leader. Where was she?

I very much doubt Starmer & Reeves will be concerned. The rest of us can just watch & laugh.

Not sure about that. It’s Labour they’ll take votes from and particularly the younger voters who have just been given a vote.

The most important part is do the public want to hear about it and given traction with sign up many seem to. They are unlikely to be in power but a few MPs or votes going to them can be change things, more so on the left.

Not sure it’s membership though, more expression of interest.

ld vote for them.

Voted Labour all my life.

noblegiraffe · 27/07/2025 11:43

Polling intentions suggest they will take a larger percentage of votes from the Greens than Labour

R0ckandHardPlace · 27/07/2025 11:56

I’d imagine most people who would vote for the new party wouldn’t be voting Labour anyway. Starmer had already purged the party of any members who were slightly to the left of John Major. Most of those turned to the Greens, or were just left politically unrepresented by any mainstream party.

I’m hoping they’ll take votes from Reform once people see that there is a voice for the working class, but without the racist bile.

PurpleChrayn · 27/07/2025 11:59

Jezbollah, surely.

I don’t think anyone is indicating it’ll be from Reform. Labour have more to lose as if votes go it’ll be their seats taken.

Greens we’ll see if they combine with Corbyn in any way but for them it’s not a will we be in power question.

And so the right wing press begins to brainwash everyone. Very clever propaganda. I think they must be anxious and will do everything to quash this. Anyone who joins this party has to be prepared to be slaughtered in the press.

Well, that's business as usual then isn't it? In this country we are used to a complete shambles. We might as well give this version of a complete shambles a hearing at least. We've tried everything else. Wtf, a lot of people are considering voting Farage into power. I have only ever seen him go down to the coast with binoculars looking for rubber dinghies, encouraging riots, or disappearing on a jolly or up Trump's fundament.

noblegiraffe · 27/07/2025 17:08

NellitheNelephant · 27/07/2025 16:17

No, it isn’t even a political party yet. It is counting people who signed up for a mailing list, not people who have paid a membership fee.

According to Corbyn's website, 400,000 have shown an interest. I'm sure when he was leader it was the biggest left wing party in Europe.

Which is obviously a very different thing to having 400k paying members. Typing in your email address is easy. Adding your bank details is harder. We’ll see how many of those people decide to put their hands in their pockets & actually sign up. If they get 10% they will be doing well.

notquiteruralbliss · 27/07/2025 18:50

I signed up and donated. As have a few of my friends - mostly left leaning, politically active higher rate tax payers with professional jobs who don't feel the current Labour party represents them.

LochKatrine · 27/07/2025 18:50

Nannerlmoz · 25/07/2025 22:16

I wish they’d just admit it doesn’t have a name because they can’t think of one.

People have suggested good ones, though.
I particularly liked "Jezbollah".

Yes of course. It will be interesting to see how many sign up as members.

MasterBeth · 27/07/2025 19:02

It doesn't really matter what it's called. Justice. Dignity. Solidarity. Unity. No-one's voting Reform because it's called Reform.

But to not even have a name is pathetic. Unserious. Amateur. Just what you'd expect from Corbyn.

Yellowbirdcage · 27/07/2025 19:04

Corbyn is 76. I’m going to sound ageist but I wish all these people pushing 80 would accept loss of influence gracefully and put any remaining energy behind the next generation. Why is politics so full of geriatrics these days?

SisterTeatime · 27/07/2025 19:08

Jezbollah is excellent.
