To be pissed off that people messing me around with my offer of a free fridge

I'm giving away a fridge via Freecycle. It's 18 months old, good clean condition. No mould in the seals I keep a very clean & tidy house. It's smallish with an icebox, ideal for a couple starting out or as a drinks fridge. It was a temporary buy until I got my kitchen refurbished & I've replaced it with a fridge/freezer. Now I need to get rid.

I've had 3 people interested, 2 saying that they will collect today - one this morning at 08:00, at 11:00 - after a no show, I sent a message saying that they had until 13:00 otherwise I would offer to the other people interested. I then sent a message to both other's who were interested saying No1 had let me down & the first of them who could collect it gets it as is in the middle of my kitchen & in the way. I get a message from no3 asking if I can keep ir until Tuesday as he's 40 minutes away from me. No response from no2.

I'm thinking how difficult it is to give a perfectly good clean serviceable fridge away? My next stop is to a charity who will be very grateful for it.

AIBU to be rather pissed off?

I had the same with a lovely big dolls house. Several time wasters. One carried it out of the house then changed her mind and left. I have a physical disability and couldn't get it back in again. Sadly we will just take it to the tip now

I encounter this a lot,or I used to. I make things and sell them at markets and often take commissions. I always used to say pay when it's finished and you pick up, not any more! When people order at the market stall without fail the transaction goes smoothly but on FB it's a bloody nightmare. They order it then mess around when it's time to pick up or one woman rocked up a month later and wondered why I'd sold her item, after a no show and no communication. 🙄

I would give it to the British Heart Foundation as they will collect it from you for free and they safety check everything electrical.

I had this with a desk. I put it in a local facebook page. Had lots of people wanting it. But no one turned up. I offered to a charity who arranged a date for collection. Didn’t turn up.

i went for Facebook market place. Had lots of offers. First 3 people trolls. But did get someone to collect. There was a buyers verification on their profile

I’ve always found it easier to get rid of something for a token amount than for free.

MyGirlDaisy · 26/07/2025 10:32

After my last experience of giving something away for free I won’t be doing it again. People are rude and ungrateful. Honestly I would rather bin something now than go through the hassle of trying to do something kind.

It really is a shame that people mess around.

I've had a few things from Freecycle / Freegle and been very grateful.

It’s also the manners people use (or dont) when asking about free items, they are cf’s, I just ignore them if they can’t even ask properly. It’s like they are doing u the favour when really I can dump stuff no prob just hate things going to waste .

Aren't they just??!!! I see ill-mannered requests on Nextdoor app ie Need fridge asap, want lawnmower London W10, Looking for free baby clothes, Anyone got strimmer free. No pleases or thank yous. Yes, you are absolutely right, it's like they're the important ones taking it off your hands and you are just some minion at their beck and call. Grrrr.

@Imaybeoldbutstillrandy and @morbidcuriosity

British Heart Foundation will accept a fridge or fridge freezer, test it, and sell it on. You can gift aid it too, so the Government have to cough up a little bit extra to the charity.

People are so in the mindset of Amazon and eBay, where delivery is quick and free (well, included in the price).

I think they are happy to take for granted the assumption of free delivery, whilst conveniently ignoring the fact that the item is free/cheap, and being given away/sold by an individual rather than a company.

Moreover, many people on FreeCycle think they are doing you a great favour by taking old rubbish off your hands. Except it obviously isn't old rubbish at all, otherwise they wouldn't have wanted it in the first place!

Still, they often suspect that you're passing off broken rubbish as working and decent in order to get some mug to take it away from you - because that is exactly what they would do. If it has any value, they would be selling it - so the fact that you're giving it away must mean that you know something is awry, they reckon.

I stopped bothering with all this years ago. The amount of admin involved with timewasting freaks on there isn’t worth it. I just put things straight outside my house with a “please take” sign. Clothing goes in a clothing recycling bag and someone will come along to nab it and sell it. Job done ✔️

Yes, I often put things out on 'Wall-mart' if it hasn't sold online or it not worth the hassle of selling. Most often the things go really quickly including clothes. Sometimes I'll take stuff to the hospice charity shop. Anything not taken is recycled at home or binned but it's rare to have left overs. Untaken clothes can be recycled at home where I live in a bag outside or there's a Salvation Army container near me.
