Will you be home all day?

Quite lighthearted but is anyone happy to have a buyer come to collect an item they are purchasing at an unspecified time?
I’ve been selling things on Facebook Marketplace.
I am mostly retired and can probably arrange to be home at any time convenient to the buyer.
When I ask when they would like to collect they invariably suggest a morning or afternoon, sometimes a whole day, and then ask if I will be here the whole time.
I then have to explain that whilst I can be here at any time they suggest in advance I can’t be here all the time, which seems to confuse people.
I don’t really think I’m being awkward ( posting in AIBU is a good way to find out), but I hate waiting around for people. I can’t pop to the shop or drop off something to a neighbour, have a shower, and I even feel like I need to rush when going to the loo in case I miss them. I also have a dog who is like Houdini and it works better to know an approximate time so that I can make sure he’s safely inside.
Are some people genuinely ok with callers coming at any time?

It's when you get one of those deliveries/pickup slots anytime between 8-6 which drive me nuts. Not too bad if they have tracker which activate when they are on their way.

Even if I'm home all day I'd given them shorter time slots that are convenient to me. Like "on X day 11-1 or 4-6pm". It just forces to pick a time, or respond with an alternative time if they can't make it.

I'm in my 60's and it seems to gobsmack certain agencies that I am not just sitting in all day crocheting and ringing my offspring. I've had my doctor's surgery try to send me appointment times (for an asthma clinic, when my asthma is the LEAST of my worries) which are always during the day and being totally taken aback when I say 'actually I'll be at work then.' Do people genuinely think everyone over the age of fifty five is drawing a pension and watching Midsomer Murders all day?

You might be surprised, but over the years on Mumsnet, I've discovered that far too many people believe anyone over 50 is wealthy and thriving by draining the younger generation. Some even think those over 50 shouldn't be allowed a pension or even a life.

I always negotiate a specific time for people to collect stuff.

I've had the same problem today with the Post Office who arrived after 4pm after I'd waited in all day. They said "before 3". Last week again I waited in all day for Fedex, who made it clear the round they did was entirely up to them with no time slots and not done for the benefit of customers. Noone wants to stay in all day, I'm sure.

I can be available any time, by arrangement.

This - I wouldn't tell anyone what time I may or not be at home, but would be happy to arrange a specific time frame - unfortunately due to not wanting strangers to know when the house would unoccupied.

I dont ask when they can collect, I say "what time suits you between 10 and 12?"

Probably paranoid but i dont want to tell a random ill be out in the afternoon.

BooneyBeautiful · 25/07/2025 23:48

I always put the first part of my postcode in the listing, but don't give out my full address until the buyer has given me the day they want to collect and at what time. I also ask them to let me know if they are running late or aren't coming for any reason. The slightly annoying part is when they message to say, "Just leaving now" when I have absolutely no idea where they are leaving from!

Lasnailinthecoffin · 29/07/2025 14:50

Worse still are those potential buyers who make an arrangement and never turn up at all! So you waste your time and keep thinking they might appear. Some never even reply when you try to check if they are coming.
