Carry on - to pack a lot of stuff?

Inspired by the current thread about carrying handbags and what they contain. Due to go on holiday next month, an 11 hour flight to the US. I take a holdall on containing my book, toiletries, make up, jewellery, hair stuff, medication. The holdall is usually fit to burst and very heavy. I also take a cross body bag with money, phone, tissues, lip balm, anti bac gel etc. Do you pack a lot or somehow travel light. Any tips gratefully welcomed?

I have been known to travel with just my camera bag containing camera, lenses, purse and passport as carry on, but then I was in business class and had a 40kg checked in baggage allowance, of which I used about 25kg.
These days I have my handbag which also contains mobile phone and iPad plus said camera bag and all the rest goes in the suitcase to be checked in. Still business class, though, as long-haul flight.
Currently looking at a 2 week holiday on the Red Sea, there are packages, but I am tending towards booking everything separately as it does not seem to be that much more expensive.

I travel light, and have got lighter each time I travel. Do you really need all those things? How much do you use when you are away? I tend to stick a load of laundry on wherever I am staying so I pack with that in mind. I rarely take jewellery away. I take multi-use makeup. I read ebooks if I want to read (or buy a book at my destination).

I was also on that thread, in team pack light! I frequently travel to the US (4-5 times a year) and take one, medium backpack which meets the ‘personal item’ spec:
Work Laptop
Cable organising pouch for charging leads/powerbank/headphones
Phone
Passport/boarding pass
Keys
Small, clear pouch (very small!) with a comb/2 paracetamol/hand gel/2x individually wrapped antibacterial wipes/chewing gum/lip balm

I don’t wear make up to fly anyway, and always pack my suitcase to have a makeup case/change of clothes easily accessible on arrival. On the off chance my suitcase gets lost/delayed (never happened yet, touch wood) the inconvenience of needing to buy a new outfit/toiletries is outweighed by the ease of travelling/not faffing with the overhead lockers in general. I’d probably rethink that strategy if heading somewhere exotic/less easy to find a supermarket than the US though.

I travel light, don't have any medication, don't wear make up or jewellery and don't have hair stuff beyond a brush. I wouldn't take a book, I'd read on a kindle, I wouldn't take antibac. We only take a carry on backpack and no hold luggage even on long haul now.
