To think if you send me more than two pages on your CV, I’m not reading it?

I don’t care how senior the role is - if you can’t summarise your experience in two pages, I’m already switching off. To me, it shows poor judgement, lack of clarity, and zero respect for the reader’s time.

AIBU to think concise = competent?

You are rude

No3392 · 24/07/2025 09:22

I agree

TY78910 · 24/07/2025 09:22

I mean, weird post - don’t know who’s pissed in your cornflakes this morning.

The general unspoken rule is yes, max two pages, but I don’t see why it makes you so angry if someone submits more to the point where you need to make a bashing thread about it. Ultimately, I’m glad there are people that have the energy to write so much about themselves to look for a job. They could just not bother.

StMarie4me · 24/07/2025 09:23

This has been this way for 30 years. It’s nothing new.

Jane958 · 24/07/2025 09:24

I got my CV down from 7 to 5 sides of A4, but I have over 30 years' experience with some very blue chip, global companies. Wouldn't you want to know about that?
Anyway I tailor my CV each time I apply for a new project, so it does usually end up being 2 pages denoted as a "summary".
As a matter of interest, surely one of your skills should be skim reading for relevant details?

Not at all, just allergic to waffle and war and peace applications.

If you put too much detail on you just end up listing quite basic tasks. And then I start thinking oh, this person thinks completing an office of national statistics survey is worth putting on their CV - okay they clearly can't do anything complicated.

Keep it to the most impressive stuff and then elaborate at interview.

Rabbitrabbitrun · 24/07/2025 09:26

I used to short list and interview. I completely agree with you @SnugShaker .

Even two pages is a lot. Keep it short, succinct and easy to read.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 24/07/2025 09:29

I agree, currently recruiting for an entry role, someone 2 years our of education, has a 9 page CV. Way too much detail.

Fair - a 2-page summary tailored to the role is exactly what I respect. My gripe is more with generic CVs that read like a life story with no edit button. Thirty years of experience can absolutely shine… just not in seven unfiltered pages! (And sure, I can skim but I shouldn’t have to. If clarity is a strength, show me that from page one.)

YANBU - I once received a CV that was 7 pages long, and the covering letter was 5 pages. It was for a relatively junior position.

W0tnow · 24/07/2025 09:47

I agree. I also think that if you’re after a senior position, you should know that 2 pages is sufficient. And don’t come at me with your teeny tiny font and squeezy spacing either!

reversegear · 24/07/2025 09:47

I agree I just need an overview. I can see if you’ll be a good fit front hat and then explore more face to face.

Vaxtable · 24/07/2025 09:18

How that rude? Rude is the wrong word. Rude would be her saying to a candidate your cv is shit. I agree op.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 24/07/2025 09:49

Well, it’s well known that 2 pages is standard for a CV but I’d expect that to be articulated in the application pack.
Unless it’s an academic CV, they tend to be much longer.

Moltenpink · 24/07/2025 09:50

I keep having arguments like this with my work onboarding department. The cvs they expect me to consider are beyond a joke. Apparently I’m the unreasonable one because cv writing isn’t taught as a skill anymore, and terrible grammar and communication could be a sign of disability.

I recruit for office work where written communication forms a large part of the job; sorry if I reject a cv from someone who didn’t use a single capital letter (yes this actually happened and they tried to force me to interview the guy)

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 24/07/2025 09:51

I was always taught 2 pages max and I have helped many friends and my partner trim down to 2 pages. It's an accepted limit and I would think seeing someone with more doesn't understand social norms for work which is a red flag.

For what its worth I see a lot of very senior job/ Director CVs and none go over a page- they are ruthless in what they include/ cut- I can't bring myself to cut that much!

MC846 · 24/07/2025 09:53

I completely agree, I need to screen hundreds of CVs for jobs and any CV I open that is over 2 pages gets immediately closed and negged regardless of the role.

SpanThatWorld · 24/07/2025 09:55

If you are sending out a Job Description with 30 points I need to comment on in my application in order to get an interview YABU

If you need me to submit a list of my entire 40 year work history explaining any gaps YABU

Confusdworriedmum · 24/07/2025 09:57

It depends. In the sector I'm qualified in you have to disclose all your past work history so part of it would depend how many jobs you've had.
Years and years ago I went to the job centre where they managed to get my CV down to one page. Never heard back from a single job until I changed it back to two pages. Would probably be just over two now.
Where do you work so I can avoid applying?
Pretty mean to discard a CV someone has spent time and effort on just because you have decided on a stupid rule.

Anything over 15 years old really isn't relevant and shouldn't be on your CV. You can bring it up at interview if needed.

Whatwouldnanado · 24/07/2025 10:02

Recent graduate I know says the standard is one page these days? They anticipate scanning and AI screening.

Ridiculous, you'd probably complain that there wasn't enough info on a short CV. Just listing qualifications in a list or table form is going to fill most of one page and 10 GCSEs isn't going to tell you anything about a person that will differentiate them from umpteen other candidates.
