Child abuse/violence towards women in Movies.

Last night I watched a movie called Gone Baby Gone - it's Classification reads "Contains very strong language, strong violence and hard drug use" Surely to Goodness they could also indicate that it has extremely disturbing scenes of Child abuse and Child Murder. I couldn't bloody well sleep all flipping night thinking about it. I'm seriously considering lobbying the BBFC, I'd like it to CLEARLY STATE on the back of all movies if it contains Violence towards Women or Children. Am I being overly sensitive/unreasonable?

doesn't strong violence cover it?

littlehazy · 27/05/2008 17:16

Nope strong violence is ok with me if it's guys beating each other up. Will look for the other thread thanks icod - i need to pend more time on here obviously.

do they actually show the abuse?

littlehazy · 27/05/2008 17:19

They show a pair of bloody underpants soaking in the sink and the dead child in the bathtub - so not actually the abuse no.

i am not sure i am conforable with a sliding scale of violence.

littlehazy · 27/05/2008 17:21

Looked for the other thread but I couldn't find it - just found thread on Transformers/Sweeny Todd - not one related to Child Abuse/ Violence towards women.

There is already a sliding scale - mild moderate or strong violence - so what's wrong with being more precise?

OP posts:
Tortington · 27/05/2008 17:30

how precise ? who decides - its all a bit uncomfortable for my liking.

this film is catagory 18

it has violence against

men
women
children
rabbits
dogs
insects

(no men, women, children,. rabits, dogs, insects were harmed in the making of this film)

wow this film has violence against everything! super cool

expatinscotland · 27/05/2008 17:57

that would seriously bother me.

AbstractMouse · 27/05/2008 18:33

God I tried to watch that as I love the book and dennis lehane in general, but I was bored to tears, quite glad now.

I think there should just be a general "contains abuse" category. Abuse being quite different from just general violence in films.

southeastastra · 27/05/2008 18:34

was it on tv? tbh i check everything out on the IMDB before i watch films usually

squirrel42 · 27/05/2008 19:02

The website Kids In Mind goes into a lot of detail about the specfic "bad stuff" in most films ranging from 'A man shoots a man in the face with a gun' all the way to the horrors of 'A young man looks at a teenage girl with interest in a few scenes.'

littlehazy · 27/05/2008 20:49

Thanks Squirrel42 for the website! Think I'll just stick to rom-coms from now on...
Custardo - I love that you're so politically correct - good luck with that I'm sure your children will thank you for it!!

I think violence against women in particular is endemic in Hollywood. Violence is usually between men but against women. I'm totally sick of it. Even mainstream Hollywood.

The most repulsive film I ever saw was very mild by comparison to what you've seen - it was Presumed Innocent which is just a Hollywood thriller and quite tame really. But it was all based around the murder of a woman and had no compunction about basically having the film turn on a post mortem of her body. It just really revolted me that a woman's dead body (and in the case of that film, her vagina) could be used so calmly as a plot device.

And I definitely would not want to see the film you saw.

KayHarker · 27/05/2008 20:58

Personally, I hate horror movies all about gratuitous torture. I just cannot get my head round the mindset that wants to watch people being tortured and murdered.

There's a gross amount of misogyny on display in them, but I'd hesitate to say that it was that which disturbed me the most, cos, let's face it, torture is torture on men or women. Vile.
