Ear piercing

My DD is going to have her ears pierced. My trusted salon uses Studex and says their solution heals the piercing in 3 weeks. I’ve heard needles are better than this type of piercing, but why? Surely if they’re unsafe they wouldn’t be allowed to do it?

my Aibu… AIBU to have my daughters ears pierced with a gun?

Needles punch a hole of flesh out into which the earring can go. Studex is a gun which requires a less-sharp earring to push through as blunt force trauma.

Gun piercings were the root cause of a severe nickel allergy for me. (It’s common.). Took 30+ years for me to have my ears needle pierced with titanium earrings and have had no issues at all.

my daughter had needle piercing aged 10.

And yes, they should be banned.

Needle piercing is less traumatic to the area as it’s sharper and goes straight through, even a pointed earring used in a piercing gun will not be as sharp. Also the healing time with needle piercings is generally a bit quicker. I’ve had both and would never allow anyone to use a piercing gun on me again.
This video is quite a good visual to give you an idea:

Both if my kids have piercings done with guns with no issues. The general consensus though is that needle piercing is better.

Needles are without a doubt the safest and most effective way to do a piercing. Studex uses blunt force trauma to force the earring through, there’s a higher chance of infection and complications. I wouldn’t chance it for myself let alone a child.

Guns are usually fine, but usually wasn't what I wanted so we went with a needle.

There's no way a piercing will heal in 3 weeks either so that's a con as well. I have upper lobe piercings that are being a pain and haven't fully healed in several months

DirtyAnimal · 24/07/2025 06:55

Yeh I thought the 3 weeks thing was questionable!

I’ve had both guns and needles and never really had an issue with either 🤷‍♀️ I am allergic to certain metals and just make sure the stud are not them

my teen has had both, 1st gun one was terrible and took over a year to heal, 1st needle was terrible and took 9 months to heal fully, 2nd of both absolutely no issues what so ever - upper ear was done at the weekend with a needle and so far no issues

teen 2 - has their first done at the weekend with a needle as well and again so far no issues.

so a mixed bag here completely and utterly not helpful I always now go to the same place as they are dedicated piercers not some random person who’s done a 2 hour course not sure how accurate that is but I would trust a place like Claire’s

Edited to add none of my piercing have ever healed in 3 weeks, that is absolute rubbish

Piercings can’t heal in three weeks no matter what method is used - you’re basically creating an open wound in your flesh.

I’ve had both gun and needle piercings - needles were smoother, less painful and easier to keep clean and heal, because they used proper titanium labret studs, not butterfly backs.

If I had my time again I would never have had any gun piercings.

DirtyAnimal · 25/07/2025 08:27

We did it! With a needle in a piercing studio, labret backs and no tears- success!
