Started new job and it’s soul destroying

I started a new office job a couple of weeks ago and since I’ve started, I’m forever asking the manager if there is any thing for me to do. As far as I’m aware my colleagues have work to do although there have been a few obvious moments where there isn’t any work as they have been chatting or just staring out a window.

i haven’t been shown how to do anything properly and it is getting soul destroying now not having any proper work to do, I’ve never experienced this before. It’s also quite embarrassing to keep asking the manager if they have any work for me as surely they should be keeping me busy.

AIBU to look for another job?

Is it the "quiet season" and expected to get busier at some point? If it is, then your job could pick up and get busier and more interesting after the summer - you could ask your manager? If it's like this all the time, I think fair enough to look for a new job, being bored is awful! Good luck!

I don’t believe so, I think it’s quite busy at the moment as they have taken on another business, which was why I was brought on. It feels as though I should give it a bit more time before looking and not sure I can take the job hunting process again however I really don’t think I am justifying my wage and really considering why I have been recruited as there doesn’t seem like much work for me

Could you use this opportunity to get very familiar with all the processes and procedures in your area of work? Have a good read through all company policies, make suggestions for improvement?
Is there any training you could do whilst things are quiet?

I've been in that position and it's very unsettling. I would make an appointment to see the boss and officially get some guidelines on what you should be doing. It's possible that everybody thinks somebody else has told you (you could even say that), and that if you don't clarify it, eventually you will be criticised for not having done something that nobody told you you should be doing.

Not your problem really.

Just start quietly looking for another job and also do everything you're asked to do.
Also keep offering to do more.

But ultimately - you can't control other people.

I can’t find any documents on the drive regarding company policies, it’s quite an unorganised company by first impressions and I’ve not been issued my contract yet either
