To travel within the uk for dental work

Twothurty · 22/07/2025 11:43

I may have to sell a kidney to afford the dental care I need. I live in Greater London and have been told by my dentist that I’m looking at £4k for an extraction and implant if my crown fails again.
Google tells me it’s much less in wales/the midlands. WIBU to shop around and go elsewhere for specific dental care? I appreciate multiple visits might be needed but that’s still preferable to paying double the costs I could be paying locally. Has anyone done this / do this?

No reason not to if it will work out cheaper and you are OK with the travel.
Didn't people used to fly to Hungary for all of their routine dental work as it was cheaper than the UK?

LightCameraBitchSmile · 22/07/2025 11:47

Assume this is private? London has very good nhs availability in general but I’m assuming that isn’t an option for you?

Clumsycorvid · 22/07/2025 11:53

If you can travel for it, go for it! Depending on what's needed maybe make a little trip out of it? Hotel etc.

marmite2025 · 22/07/2025 11:57

I’m sure there was an implant centre people recommended on here
brighton maybe?

Twothurty · 22/07/2025 14:08

Thanks, not sure I’d go abroad but the local prices are eye watering! Unfortunately NHS only do implants in specific cases - life of having a sweet tooth not being one of them. I will look out for implant centres and keep researching…

I have DenPlan and pay £38pcm. Includes all routine appointments and any treatments. Would moving into private dental care be an option?

AllHoityToity · 22/07/2025 14:54

I was going to say about the Brighton one. I travelled over an hour for my implant to Burton on Trent but you do have to go a lot. It’s not a quick process at all.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/07/2025 14:58

If it’s not nhs I don’t see why this is an issue though I’d be surprised if you saved a lot of money when considering travel etc

look at going abroad

Yanbu to be shocked at the cost of dental care

Waitingfordoggo · 22/07/2025 16:15

YANBU to consider it.

I have had recommendations for the Brighton Implant clinic and I am booked in with them for two implants in October (I live very near B’ton and the clinic has a branch in my town). I am going to get a second opinion as well though because my dentist friend doesn’t seem to rate the Brighton implant clinic that highly 😕 (She says she thinks they use cheap materials and has seen a few patients whose implants failed from there- but implants can fail anyway so she might be wrong about the clinic).

I would be very hesitant to go abroad- implants usually have to be done over several appointments, and if things go wrong, you’ll presumably have a hard time getting your money back or problems fixed (my dentist friend tells me she has seen a fair few patients who have had this sort of work abroad and it hasn’t gone well. I have heard of others who’ve been very happy with work they’ve had in Turkey etc but I wouldn’t take the risk personally.)

My daughter was in India for yoga training. Before she came home, she had a full scale and polish, X-rays and a couple of fillings, in a spotless modern surgery by a UK-trained dentist. Less than £80. I just had 2 tiny fillings here in the UK, cost almost £250 each.

I don’t think private plans cover implants, might be a slight reduction

Twothurty · 22/07/2025 18:08

Thank you. I also have Denplan and pay £38 a month but all that seems to give me is 10% off fillings and 2 check ups and hygienist appointments a years. Even with 10% off I’m still paying over £300 for a filling.

i definitely wouldn’t entertain going abroad. Fair play to those that have and it’s worked out well but it’s not something I’m considering.

Good luck in Brighton waitingfordoggo. I’ll check them out.

Wow I get my (white) fillings included in my DenPlan! How confusing. Hope you get sorted.

Are you sure?
I paid this and live in South Wales UK and get the same as the OP except only 1 hygienist appointment, 20% off the 2nd.
I now go on holiday to Thailand and have all my dental work done there! 3 white fillings, full scale/polish, whitening and 2 composite teeth ( mine had fractured and don't want implants yet) all for £240. Highly trained in the U.S, with a state -of -the- art clinic.

Me too. I get 10% off fillings and one x-ray a year.

Yes in NW England on DenPlan I can see dentist and hygienist twice a year, scale and polish etc. No extra charges. I wonder why it varies so much... All my family are on DenPlan and are the same.

Twothurty · 22/07/2025 20:55

I think there might be different levels of denplan cover - im probably on the basic.

Always wanted to go to Thailand, might have to consider a bit of health tourism after all 😅

My son had two teeth taken out recently. Cost me £275 in the east midlands. Lovely dentist, very understanding as he was nervous

I’m so grateful to have an NHS dentist- my extractions cost £75 a tooth! (Actually I still haven’t paid for one of them- I got referred to a specialist as it was a tricky extraction. They didn’t charge me there and told me my regular dentist would charge me when I next saw him. But he didn’t either and the extraction was two years ago 😂)
