Nursery issue

So I’ll preface this by saying I really like, don’t love, the nursery my 4 year old is at - nice, kind staff but not the best at communication or activities regarding development etc. I went to pick up a couple of hours early today and found the main gate wide open (it usually has a latch at the top for parents to open) and the door for my child’s room wide open too. Inside, about 8 children were playing and a staff member was sitting with them playing with them. I said ‘oh, the door and gate are both open, I wanted to let you know for safety reasons’ and she said ‘ooh, I’ll get them closed now.’

It has made me feel quite unsettled, as it feels like quite a major safeguarding risk to me. It would have only taken one split second of her being distracted with another child for one of the children to be out of the door and into the car park. Out of the car park is a busy main road. I don’t want to jump to emailing the nursery manager as it feels like it was a lapse of judgement and I don’t want to get anyone in trouble but equally I want them to tighten up their processes. It makes my blood run cold as to what could have happened. I thought I’d have a quiet word with the room leader/my daughter’s key worker. WWYD?

It is a safeguarding concern, can you follow up with an email to the management? It's best to get these things in writing.

This would worry me too. Surely the doors should be self-closing (and auto-locking..)?

I would probably have a quiet word with the management, as this is something that they should have flagged in risk assessments.

The gate is down to parents leaving to close behind them and nursery have posted on the app about that before. The toddler room door being open seems to be to get some air in or something? She obviously knew it was open but hasn’t realised it was completely clear access from the children to the car park/road. It seems basic safety to me though

I'd email the manager. Presumably this also means anyone off the street could walk in too.

I agree that you should flag it with management. It's not enough to rely on parents shutting the gate if that's already known to be an issue.

If it's a case of needing more air on really hot days, perhaps they could look at getting a stair gate to put across the doorway.

Do they not have a door out to a play area or anything that they could leave open for fresh air, instead of the main door? If the gate is parents responsibility it doesn't seem worth the risk to have the main door open!
