Is my one year old taking the p*** out of me?

my one year old little girl will only eat shop bought baby food!
I always make her a totally random range of our food what we are eating, she always has bits on her high chair from our meals and she’s put it in her mouth chews it and spits it out.

I made pasta bake tonight, I thought I’ll make it like a shop bought baby pot. Loads of sauce cut up very finely annnnddd nope!

honestly I know I’m no Gordon Ramsey but my cooking isn’t that bad.

whats going on, anyone experienced anything similar?

Are you seasoning your food baby food is really bland ?

hididdlyho · 20/07/2025 17:29

Could you mix in a small amount of the bought food with the homemade to see if you can get her used to it?

mygrandchildrenrock · 20/07/2025 17:30

Try mixing half and half. The trouble with shop bought food is it is always the same taste, consistency, smell and colour. Home cooked food often varies. Hopefully, mixing half and half will help your little one adapt her tastes.

Does she eat it straight out of the jars? Can you rinse out a used jar and put your food in it and see if she eats it.
She might just be recognising the jars.

I mean, I doubt she’s taking the piss deliberately? Maybe the shop bought stuff has more flavour?

NuffSaidSam · 20/07/2025 17:33

Stop using shop bought stuff, she'll get used to home cooked. Completely remove the option of shop bought.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 20/07/2025 17:45

My middle DS was like this, I once made him a lovely Christmas lunch and he wouldn't eat any of it. Once he was about 18 months he did improve a bit. He was always quite fussy growing up but he's an adult now and appears to have grown out of it 😀

Mummy9431 · 20/07/2025 17:46

I would totally stop the shop bought if she actually ate any other food.
so I do breakfast out food
dinner our food
tea our food
baby food pot as a back up if she’s eaten nothing all day.

i will definitely try mixing it, i would of never thought of that!
and ill try putting it into a jar but we don’t really buy the jars it’s more the bowl type of food.

yes I do season the food quite a lot tbh so ill cut that back for abit.

thanks!

Perhaps the texture of home cooking is not consistent enough? I was a fussy eater of home cooking as a child and my dad would patiently mush everything with a fork (much to my mother’s disgust) but I would wolf the whole lot.

Mummy9431 · 20/07/2025 17:56

Yeah I don’t mind mushing her food if that’s what it takes for her to actually eat it.

I think I’m more concerned as to why she’s not swallowing much.
I don’t know if I’m worrying too quickly/ expecting too much from her at one 🤷‍♀️

It’s because the shop jars are full of crap no offence. I’m guilty of using them at times too before so no judgement.

You are basically offering her lovely home cooked food and she waits it out for her happy meal.

You need to go cold turkey because unless she has something like afrid? She won’t starve herself. Just make sure there are various options thoughout the day not just a strict banana for breakfast nothing else.

PeonyBlushSuede · 20/07/2025 18:06

Wait till they go to nursery - my son eats all sorts at nursery, we try cooking the exact same thing and he won’t touch it!

Mummy9431 · 20/07/2025 19:44

Nursery say she’s hit and miss with meals some stuff like spaghetti hoops she eats all of it but then the more harder foods she won’t touch at all 🤷‍♀️
