To warn you about the dangers of a vinegar soak.......

I was diagnosed with Athletes Foot. Podiatrist recommend Lamisil spray which didn't touch it. So turned to Dr Google who recommended a vinegar Foot soak. Admittedly I didn't observe the rule for ratio of vinegar to water and sloshed in about quarter of a bottle of vinegar to not much water and merrily soaked away for 20 mins. Stung like a bitch but I thought great, it must be working. Quick rinse in shower, job done!

Woke up yesterday to weeping feet and feeling like I'd been stood in stinging nettles. As the day progressed my toes got more red and angry, with weeping blisters.

I have chemical burns to both feet. Been seen andvhad them dressed by my MIL who is a district nurse. Currently sat here feeling very sorry for myself and very angry at my stupidity. Of course vinegar is extremely acidic - be very careful and use it carefully - or not at all! Going forward it don't even think I could face it on my chips!!

Margaret Dabbs Foot Hygiene Cream is what you need once you've healed up.

Thanks for the warning. I am the sort of person to add too much "just to be sure". I generally use salt baths for my feet.

This, we've all had dumb ass moments.

I remember trying to glue my boots a few years a go, I didn't have anything to hold pressure so stuck my foot in it and held it down for a while while watching tv. Obviously I glued my boot to my foot and the boot to the floor. Dumb!

Oh my this is hilarious, though not for you at the time of course. How the heck did you get help and escape? (without resorting to sawing your foot off)

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/07/2025 18:32

When you say Lamisil didnt touch it, how long did you give it?

I did the seven day treatment and its only now, about a month/6 weeks later that the skin is recovering. It kills the fungus but the skin needs a while to regenerate.

I wonder if you were being too impatient.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 20/07/2025 18:34

I wrecked my carpet getting the boot off it, then slept in the glue boot. Next day there was a lot of cutting, soaking, oil and anything else Google could suggest to get it off. It did come off eventually without too much damage to my foot.

The call to work to explain my dilemma and that I couldn't get my uniform on due to it not going over the boot...that was interesting.

I'm usually a mildly intelligent human. No idea what I was thinking!

CanIbeRio · 20/07/2025 18:46

@HobnobsChoice yes - I posted in health for advice on what to do. Now I just wanted to post a warning!!

One thing we can all be sure of is that everyone will have at least one glue incident in our lives. My brother glued his thumb and forefinger together, and decided to release them by cutting them apart with a razor blade, with hilarious consequences. Yours is the best glue story I've heard so far.

I read a story (might've been on here) about a woman who decided to try waxing her vag at home. She got the hot wax on, then couldn't remove it with the strips. She decided to abandon and wash the wax off, but there was so much and she couldn't get it off whatever she used. So she got in a hot soapy bath hoping to dilute it off, and glued her arse to the bottom of the bath. Luckily she was able to call for help and a friend helped to release her lady parts with baby oil.

CanIbeRio · 20/07/2025 18:47

@GeniuneWorkOfFart household White wine vinegar

OP posts:
CanIbeRio · 20/07/2025 18:49

@After800Years absolutely accept that - but I didn't realise the consequences!! When I do a salt bath I always whack in a bit extra for hood measure!! I was applying the same principal.....completely forgetting how acidic vinegar is 🫤

This is amazing 🤣 how did you get them off??

Muffinmam · 20/07/2025 18:55

The home remedy for athlete’s foot is equal parts vinegar + Listerine mouth wash & boiling water.

Listerine mouthwash contains several ingredients with antifungal properties, primarily eucalyptol, menthol, and thymol. These essential oils disrupt the cell structure of fungi leading to cell death.

The boiling water just dilutes the vinegar and Listerine as well as heating up the solution so it can penetrate your skin more easily.

I’m thinking some of that skin weeping would be due to the fungal infection itself.

After you’ve soaked your feet you need to use a clotrimizol topical cream on your feet and wear socks to bed.

If you can’t get rid of the fungal infection you need to see your doctor so you can take oral antifungals.

I think your feet will be fine - so long as you don’t contract a secondary bacterial infection. I’m wondering if your feel will peel off like when you use a salicylic acid to remove dead skin and the whole thing peels off.

soupyspoon · 20/07/2025 18:56

Oh bless OP, I'd probably do something like that too

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 20/07/2025 19:33

Funnily enough, i was actually thinking of doing this for my athlete's foot. I have apple cider vinegar and Listerine and will definitely dilute it really thoroughly and make sure to be careful 🧐

tea tree oil is natural anti fungal.

Mumsnet trumps Netflix

rosesandkisses · 20/07/2025 19:37

(I do hope your feet are OK OP as an aside)

XXLfiles · 20/07/2025 19:37

But do you still have the athlete foot problem🙈

CanIbeRio · 20/07/2025 19:45

@XXLfiles idk tbh. My feet just feel shredded full stop. Its hard to tell what's AF and what's Vinegargate!!!
I guess i'll know in a few days when this settles. I bloody well hope so - every cloud and all that!!!

We all do silly stuff like this sometimes, I know I have.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

MyLov · 21/07/2025 16:56

Quamarina · 20/07/2025 17:36

I really hope you’re feeling much better soon. I made a similar mistake years ago with a bleach bath for eczema, I’d always done the same routine of 2 cups of thin bleach in a bath (very deep large bath so not as much bleach as it sounds) this occasion I used extra thick bleach because that’s all I had in the cupboard, but didn’t think to reduce how much I added & it must be so much more concentrated than the watered down stuff. My skin was livid, raw, so painful & swollen & I wasn’t in the bath for long before I knew something was wrong. I’ve switched to Dead Sea Salt, there’s zero chance of overdosing on that

Thick bleach is also full of other crap that you could have reacted to.
