More butterflies than usual?

I don’t know if I’m imagining it but there seems to be more butterflies around this summer than for as long as I can remember. Has anyone noticed this?

Its lovely, such beautiful creatures.

I think so - more than the last couple of years. Also more flies!

JudgeBread · 20/07/2025 15:07

I was just saying this to my husband, must've been a good year for them because they're everywhere. I've already had to usher three out of my house today.

Lots more bumblebees too! It's lovely to see.

shellyleppard · 20/07/2025 15:08

@Nannerlmoz definitely been a lot more around this year. My son has also had a huge amount of ladybirds near his college. So lovely to see them all.

Britneyfan · 20/07/2025 15:09

I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago that I've never seen so many butterflies at once in my back garden! It’s lovely.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/07/2025 15:10

Many more, yes. I am sat in an inner London park watching four Cabbage White butterflies circle round a patch of bushes.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 20/07/2025 15:10

There was anarticle about this on the BBC website yesterday. More butterflies, ladybirds and wasps. It's the weather.

Britneyfan · 20/07/2025 15:11

They do formally track the numbers in the “Big Butterfly Count” so it will be interesting to see if that is what shows up in the data. Also from participating in this previously I think some weather conditions are better for certain types of butterflies, the ones I’ve seen are mostly the cabbage white type ones.

Mwnci123 · 20/07/2025 15:11

Yes. It's been lovely seeing them everywhere.

you should join in with this.

O00ps · 20/07/2025 15:11

Ive never seen so many caterpillars eating my plants 😁

Nannerlmoz · 20/07/2025 15:12

Glad it’s not just me imagining it!

The ones I’ve seen most often are cabbage whites, but I did see a blue one (that I’ve not been able to identify) on a patch of woodland near us yesterday.

We were on holiday in Greece a few months ago and it was the same there - butterflies galore!

I’ve seen a fair few cabbage whites, a couple of lovely red ones, and this morning I ushered a large Yellow Underwing out of the house (I screamed as I did it, I bloody hate moths!).

CranfordScones · 20/07/2025 16:03

I think there's a greater desire by many people to plant more bee and butterfly friendly species in their gardens. Doing things like planting a bit of clover in your lawn helps too. I've noticed lots of marmalade hoverflies - some people probably think they're wasps - they're very useful pollinators.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 20/07/2025 16:59

I've noticed a lot of Cabbage Whites out of late, as well as bees. They're often all over my bee and butterfly-friendly plants!

I have also seen a lot more horse-flies during the hot spell this year, and they are deeply unpleasant when they bite!

Horseebooks · 20/07/2025 17:27

And ladybugs oh my god the ladybugs!

needtostopnamechanging · 20/07/2025 17:28

There’s far fewer than when I was a child but more than in recent years

FeeLipa · 20/07/2025 17:30

Yes, lots more butterflies than previous years despite the same plants in the garden. Also more bugs in general, my car was spattered in them after a long motorway trip, I haven't noticed that in a few years.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 20/07/2025 17:33

I was thinking the same the other day.

Samsamspanner10 · 20/07/2025 17:44

Yes I had 10 in my garden all at the sametime 2 days ago. About 8 cabbage ones and a few red admiral's.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 20/07/2025 17:57

Yes there are soooo many around here 🥰.
