Leaving a 12 year old home alone

Takingthemic · 19/07/2025 17:45

From 4pm to 7.30pm two days per week.

I’d leave her an easy dinner.

I think just because it’s later I’m worrying a bit. She will be in 2nd year secondary school and is a mature girl.

Year 8? Absolutely fine.

Takingthemic · 19/07/2025 17:45

Adding that we have neighbours in the case of an emergency.

Yes year 8.

I think that's fine.

LancashireSquirrel · 19/07/2025 17:46

I think if she is okay with it then yes. If she’s not comfortable with it then I would find alternative arrangements if possible.

millymollymoomoo · 19/07/2025 17:47

Totally normal

Whatshesaid96 · 19/07/2025 17:49

I wouldn't think twice about it. No minors to supervise and an easy dinner left. As long as she has access to a phone and contact numbers I'd leave her to it.

Itsawildridealright · 19/07/2025 17:49

I will be leaving mine 2 days next week from 10.30 to 2.30 🤷‍♀️ she's too old and belligerently stubborn for any kind of holiday club, What's a parent to do??

The worst case scenario is she'll eat too much crap and watch too much TV 🙈 yours will be probably be the same?!

Elsvieta · 19/07/2025 17:49

Totally; I was home alone 4-6 five days a week from age 9. No mobiles then either.

newdaynewnam · 19/07/2025 17:50

Absolutely fine. My 12 year old walks to the station, takes s trsin and then a bus to school, and the same in returnall in all almost 1 hour per direction. then home alone for 2 hours twice a week.

I was at home alone for longer and at a younger age.

audweb · 19/07/2025 18:33

Mine lets herself in from high school every day - anywhere from like 3pm/4pm till about six. Weekends I pop out to the shops or for a coffee with a friend. They’re absolutely fine. Are they not out and about independently now? Most weekends and during the holidays they are out in town or with friends. I like things they can cook in the microwave or air fryer as it switches off and doesn’t need them remembering to turn the cooker off.

Endofyear · 19/07/2025 19:34

I think that's fine if she's a sensible girl - you know your own child best. She can always give you a ring to let you know she's home from school ok. She'll probably enjoy having the house to herself for a bit, I did at that age!

FabuIous · 19/07/2025 19:37

Depends a bit what your definition of an easy dinner is. Mine have all been a bit scatty at that age and I’d worry they’d leave the hob on etc.

stayathomer · 19/07/2025 19:37

As long as she’s not worried about it I’d think fine too (I have one worrier who even age 13 hated being left alone (someone knocked banged really on the door once while he was home alone and he was freaked out). My 12 yo now would be fine

stichguru · 19/07/2025 19:38

Yes absolutely fine

BreakfastClubBlues · 19/07/2025 20:25

Mine wouldn't like it (fine as a one off, but she would find 7.30pm x2 days a week a lot) but if I needed to do it for work then so be it!

Mine is home from 3/4 until 5/6, alone, most days. She also sometimes collects her younger brother from school on her way home.

No issues.

RoseAlone · 19/07/2025 20:26

Absolutely not!

LavenderBlue19 · 19/07/2025 20:29

Absolutely fine, I can't see why this would be a problem. Presumably she's left some during the day sometimes, and goes out locally with friends?

SALaw · 19/07/2025 20:31

Depends on the 12 year old.

Takingthemic · 19/07/2025 21:11

She goes out locally with friends and is left in the day. I think just because later and in the winter, dark.
