Police federation adverts.

I have just seen these adverts on MN.

What is going on here?

How much are police paid? They should be well paid they risk their lives. This isn’t about that general sentiment. I sympathise generally with cost of living. We are all in it. It’s shit.

But what is this slogan ‘Protecting your family shouldn’t mean she can’t provide for hers’.

If we are seriously saying police cannot provide for their families (on I assume atleast minimum wage) then do we not have a bigger issue here. Because crime is somewhat linked to poverty and people trying to provide for themselves or others.

They might be right, but what does this mean when those earning more than the minimum; the police are saying they can’t make ends meet? How are those on lower earnings expected to also make ends meet? Without robbing Tesco.

Are they right? And what does that mean? Do we need a higher minimum wage? How do we do that and stop inflation making that worthless?

For a job which needs a degree for entry, shift work and high level of risk I would say it’s poor pay.

Brokenforsummer · 19/07/2025 19:15

Many people on min wage will also be claiming UC.

Ylylyll · 19/07/2025 19:57

Police have done nothing to protect my family.

I'd rather paramedics paid more.

Nchangeo · 19/07/2025 21:10

I agree. I think they should be well paid. I am not sure what they currently earn so cant tell you whether thats the case or not. I assume not from this advert.

However that isnt what this advert is saying. It’s making it out that police cannot provide for the families. So thats not a well paid question. Thats a poverty level statement.

If police are really living in poverty then no wonder theres so much crime when many earn less.

A new constable starts on around £31,500 so better than minimum wage but not much more. I certainly wouldn’t do their job for that pay. It’s not much more than I earn in an admin role.

That's only if you get South East premium, if not it's 28,500

Icequeen01 · 20/07/2025 15:10

Bloody hell, that is low. My DS works for the police (civilian role) He’s 25 and earns more than that and doesn’t have to come in contact with members of the public.

In my previous job i dealt with police wages amongst others and it's honestly shocking how low they're paid, but also prison officers.

If your family were being threatened by someone or had been stabbed - the paramedics would be waiting around the corner for the police to go in first!

If your child had self harmed with a blade the paramedics would be waiting around the corner for the police to go in first.

If your loved one was suffering a mental health crisis or psychotic episode the paramedics would be waiting around the corner for the police to go in first.

It's always the police that go in first to ensure a location or situation is safe.
